Thanks, Good to see you back!

I’m one of Bewick’s guilty guests. I look at this site every day, but only log on if I have something to say. As one who enjoys rather too much white wine late in the evening I also have a self imposed rule not to put anything on social media of any sort after a couple of glasses of the Golden Tokay!

I do occasionally cross this line on trucknet, since my memories may be sometimes dodgy, but probably not more so than others!

Look forward to many more of your ‘accident prone?’ observations.

John.

[zb] Barrovians! and Home brew! :unamused:        Dennis.

Ah Dennis.

I don’t drink home brew now. When I started lorry driving I abandoned the joys of Cornwallis street (later named ‘the Gaza Strip’ and featured on BBC TV) and ‘the Cri’ (Criterion) where three or four pints of ‘brown fill up’ - a bottle of brown ale, filled up with bitter, would see me smiling and stupid at age 18 or 19! (Wide eyed and legless! Amen Corner…)

My idea of a night out (not weekends, but on my own, Kings Lynn, Edinburgh, Dundee, London, wherever) in the early seventies, was a ‘Wimpy’, a Chinese or an Indian, followed by a movie, where I often fell asleep!

Back to Cabin Hotel to tip or for an early start.

In Saudi, no drink at all for five or six years while driving. Once in a villa, moved to transport manager, occasional siddiqi. The sugar distilled spirit. Rough, but not too bad with Pepsi. (No Coke - sold in Israel, so banned in Saudi!)

General Manager, Julie, my wife out with me. Lots of parties. Siddiqi again. Also, a friend showed me how to make wine from the grape juice sold in the supermarkets.

Returned to Saudi on BA. Wine finings and yeast in my underpants. Also some videos (in the case, not the underpants!) Called to a side room! Videos inspected at fast forward. Suddenly remembered that Brother Andy had recorded Charley Varrick, which contained ■■■■ scenes, which were totally forbidden! Luckily he had edited it!

Eventually let go, bum nipping. Decided never to smuggle wine additives again!

What I brought back enabled me to make good wine for a couple of years! Even Sheikh Ali, who refused wine at first from me at a dinner party, said ‘oh, I will try a glass of that’ and had several more. ‘Most wines I have had brewed by the English here have been cloudy and undrinkable, but this is very good’. I took this as a compliment from a man who buggered off on his round the world trip every Ramadan, on the basis that a traveller did not need to fast in the Holy Month, and had said ’ I only drink fine wines and champagne’.

When Julie and I left Saudi, we gave him our remaining bottles and he was happy to receive them!

So. Now, I do like white wine too much, but luckily, ÂŁ6.00 a bottle seems plenty to pay for the selection available here.

Happy days. Then and now,

John.
