Theres a great photo in to-nights Evening Chronicle, Its about the Lord Mayors Carriage going on sale, In the background is a Bedford belonging to Blakes Express Service Transport, (B E S T) they were painted blue in those days & had an office in Morden Street where all the carriers used to park . Regards Larry.
looking for any pictures of barnfather [barnfather & wilkes ] from sherburn co durham , from beginning of 60s onwards , and wa glendinning from same era… reason im asking is that my father Joe Bladen drove for these two , as well as having his own concrete mixer for A R C for a while , Sadly he passed away from a cancer related illness suddenly in july , and i would appreciate any old photos .
many thanks in advance

0Heres the photo, Im sure this is Morden Street, where the old Palace Music Hall once stood, Regards Larry.
Come on lads there must be more than me remembers BEST, The name on the Bedford, Blakes Express Service Transport Thye ran Blue Motors in the 50/60s, They had an office in the buildings behind where the old wagons are parked it was a place where all the carriers parked certain days of the week, The likes of Willis The Berwick Carrier Marrs Of Amble Lee of Rothbury, Philips of Seahouses Pentledon & Hare from Felton, Plus the ones from the Durham Area, They were great old happy days in my book, but alas all gone along with a lot of good old gaffers that we worked for, but never to be forgotten. Regards Larry.

They must of had a job lot on the paint Larry
A driver from one of our favourite firms on here had a close call the other day on the Felling By Pass, one of the cylindrical castings he was loaded with had fell off nearside and was resting against the kerb, the driver had just finished retightening his straps when a Plod car passed, he didn’t stop (might not have even seen the lump on the ground). Fortunately the motor had a hiab and the driver seemed to be quickly repositioning his motor to pick the offending article up. I’d been stopped at the lights around the corner when I saw this, hope he got it back on quickly I bet he couldn’t get that hiab moving fast enough! Heart stopping moments those! Franky.

Hi Victor,
When I was born Freddie Horn used to deliver cattle and had two cattle trucks, I believe.
Dad told me how Freddie had a Manchester Terrier ■■■■■ that went with hm everywhere and Dad always made a fuss of it, saying it was a wonderful dog. When it had pups Freddie gave one, a dog, to my dad and although I was too young to remember dad came home that night with the pup sitting in his overcoat pocket. It again turned out to be a wonderful dog and could recognise our wagons.
