Often had a night out with Gornalls drivers when I worked for mc governs on the bricks in the mid eighties. I still see Jeff Breward at the vintage truck shows now and then. Sadly I think big big Alan was killed on the M1 a few years ago, he was known to everyone as “Clatter.” Dont quite know whether it was because his false teeth made such a racket, or the fact that he had the loudest voice I had ever heard.Hi kevmac47, Not long been on the site. Noticed you worked for McGoverns in the mid eighties. I was there from 85 until 90 when all artic men were made redundant. There were some good lads on there, like John Codling, Chris Brown, Jimmy the brick, to name a few. Don’t know if you knew but the foreman Alan O’Hare passed away a few weeks ago, sad news as I knew him from childhood, having been from the same village.

Hello Bob, I was made redundant Sept 1985 this would be the week actually, I know this as my dad passed away on the 27th ( todays date) and I was out of work that same weekend. I did hear that Alan had passed away but found out to late for the funeral. I am puzzled now as I cannot put a face to you yet. By the way you missed the quiet fella off your list, who can forget Dennis Grundy■■? I was talking to Chris at the Tyne Tees Run in June. Also I met Kenny Woods (von bullet) about this time last year. Just a thought, did you work for Scurrs before Mcgovern?? Regards Kev.
Could it be the Bob also did a bit for GE Armstrong, did Your bro John work for Scurrs, If it
s the Bob I`m thinking of kevin he worked for Scurr after McGovens. Von Bullit what he doing now Kev, & if its you Bob What you doing these days? Regards Kenny W

Yes Kenny, thats the Bob I’m thinking about, I know his brother worked for Scurr. As for “the bullet” he was as “nissed as a pewt” the time I spoke to him last year so he wasn’t making a lot of sense (nowt new there eh?)
regards Kev.
I dont think I have seen a Rosewood Packaging motor on this thread, heres one. Regards Kev.

Mark, that Commer won first prize at the Tyne Tees Run back in June, (the summer■■?) It was restored by Frank Willis from Hetton. I think he is a genius!! Regards Kev.
Aye Kev It deserved to win, I wonder if it was used to carry Brewers Grains ? Regards Larry.
I know this is not really relevant to the thread, but please indulge me. I took these shots on the day of the Great North Run, this has to be one of the busiest routes on Tyneside,to see it so quiet is eerie and anyone who watched the race will know, an hour later it was overun with 50,000 bodies pushing themselves for charity, personal satisfaction, or even just enjoying themselves
. I live on the otherside of the road to where the bus is parked so it causes major disruption when the race is on but the atmosphere is something that can’t be described. When the wheelchair athlete went past the noise was deafening. Once again Brendan Foster and his crew need to be thanked. It was magic!!! regards Kev.

I think it was Horse ■■■■■ from the stables Larry !!! I got to know some of their horse draymen and ostlers when they put up in the stables behind the ■■■■ & Dolphin ( Vaux house) in Kendal. Now they were bloody big horses those Percherons, soft as ■■■■■ cats !! They used to come Kendal for the annual torchlight procession, and county show in early September for many years, they were grand lads, and could they sup a bit !! But I never reckoned much to Vaux Bitter, but when these lads insisted that it was on their “tab”,well you had to be sociable didn’t you !! At closing times(midnight usually) we had to go and see the Dray 'Hosses were bedded down for the night and they usually devoured half a dozen packets of Polo Mints, great days, now long gone !! Cheers Dennis.
Just for you Mr. Bewick. Don’t know where I got this from so apologies if I’ve stepped on anybodies toes.
Passed me bus test on one the same as that Kev, but it still had the roof on

Dennis,
I don’t think I’d like to be sitting behind a horse that had eaten half a dozen packets of polo mints, especially if I had a tab on !
