There seem to be threads for every part of the country except the north east, so howzabout setting one off. Theres plenty to go at and a few have been mentioned elsewhere such as Cawthornes, VanHee,Clarks, but what about Murray Hoggs, Jakey Adams, Fergusons of Blyth, Bells of Ashington, T T Walkers, Elddis, and what about a mention for Norman’s cafe at Brotherton a favourite watering hole for scores of North East lads.

I spent many a penny in Normans when I was driving for Bobby Durham, big proper mugs of tea and the breakfasts were gi-normous.
I also remember staying there o/night with my dad in the 50’s, a long dormitory with “stalls” like horse stables !
Proper transport caffs are few and far between these days.
Knayton caff on the A-19 was another superb stop off, great scran, basic stuff, but gorgeous and filling !

deeline:
would like to see any pic’s of the following,

JOHN DEE/DEELINE INTERNATIONAL, FERRYHILL
DENT’S OF SPENNYMOOR
DIRECT TRANSPORT, SHILDON
W H WILLIAM’S, SPENNYMOOR
E SWINDELL, PIERCEBRIDGE
D MCCUNE, NEWTON AYCLIFFE

i have worked for some of these companies who are now long gone, although j.dee now operating as katem i believe, would like to see any pic’s just to bring back a few memorie’s of when it was a pleasure to be driving unlike the just in time rat race we are all involved in today.

I did some “guvie jobs” for John Dee, delivering truck loads of pre fab doors from an outfit on Spennymoore trading estate, cash in hand - no questions asked, and at a bloody good rate for the time (70’s)

F 66 JJR, Our Nigels Leyland Roadtrain, double shifted for a while when it was brand new, minor teething problems but nothing to worry about, it had the Eagle engine which was very good on fuel and trouble free, the only reason we got the ERF was because Leylands stopped fitting the Eagle which the ERF had in , So I have to say the road train was my choice as well as Nigels too, Regards Larry.

The old roadtrain in its hayday at Uddingston brickworks loaded for Felling, Regards Larry.
