Old Money

I have added the Pic of Bonditram’s Volvo F89 to his post above, but here are a few others that might be very apt here… with the old hands and maybe these might also bring back some memories…

Hope these are okay for you David…

When I first started driving part time in mid 80’s I was given a ERF A series 6 speed David Brown with no power steering. Then progress onto F86 bubbles and F7 always wanted a go in an 88 but took 3 years to try one - it was a left hook 89 loads of power and fun to drive. Then progressed onto F12 / Merc old twin steers all of which were left hookers - this was for Wilsons of Broughbride which is now RB doing fridges.

When I first passed my test on a Dodge if was doing weekend trailer changes in an Scania 111 - still have a soft spot for them and would have one if they came up for sale.

My mate has a Pegasso Troner which he uses for aid runs to Kosovo.

Andy,

Thanks for the effort, but is it just me? All I have is little red crosses. People might think I’ve passed over :open_mouth:

This happened at first with your pics but they appeared the next time I logged on. Not so this time though.

Salut, David.

Right, Here ya go David, they should now be in your original post above and able to view!!.. AndyM

just wondering seen as they are stored at yahoo.com as i know that a lot of yahoo/geocities servers will not allow image linking so just a thought to try them else where

Bondi,
Sam Anderson still going strong, first motor F86, but had to take a fly sheet on board because when it rained the sheet had to cover the whole roof ,that was with frigo, moved on to probably my best motor the F88 , can remember driving to Frigo east end of London , 16 gears sounded beautiful, after that , the horrible marathon, and then the only scania I drove the 141, after that the big ,big, TRANSCONTI …what a motor…o the good old days!!!

Andy & Metalhead,

Thanks for valiant efforts and the pics there for all to see. The wife has just come over all unnecessary seeing herself posing on a trucker’s website!

Blimey Pat, it’s no wonder us fogeys can’t make head nor tail of it if the whizkids have so much trouble! Not that you can be much of an old fogey if you started on an F88  Puts my old Commer Bantam into perspective!
Thanks all, nice job.
Salut, David.

By the way, for anyone interested;

The White Trux F89 was at Aosta,
The Atki at my parking in Nottingham during Econofreight’s brief (one week) foray into tipper work with a Gillott & Scott of Hull trailer (same group),
The 3300 with the Morris crane on a 60 footer was at the docks, Middlesboro’ I think, and,
The Toray Foden with the set back axle trailer was in that big lay-by on Woodhead they call ‘The Cave’ returning late afternoon after the snack wagon had gone.

Salut, David.

econofreight with a tipper trailer very strange…i remember them when out with me dad on school holidays . anyone got some pictures of astrans on the middle east runs…i always fancied doing that when i was a kid… but not know

Thats great stuff Andy! I drove one just like it, it was a bit older, but a bulker as well, brings back memories.

Mal.

Sorry, I didnt make it quite clear…

The pics of the Atkinson Bulker, the Daf with 60ft trailer, and the Foden are all Bonditrams pics too, not just the F88 that I posted…

So Mal, that was a motor that Bonditram drove… not just one that i found…

Just thought I would clear that up…

Then the F88. A masterful truck with 16 speed and I think a 290 engine. But the best of all was my F89, similar but left hooked (all of them were) and more powerful.

I believe the reason they stayed LHD was that the extra power was produced by a taller engine block than a 290 so Volvo canted it over to the right to get it under the same cab. They then found that they couldnt get a gear linkage or steering column to work on a right ■■■■■■! All the 89’s were left ■■■■■■.

Scania had a similar problem with a 141 and they caused uk drivers a lot of stiff elbows trying to get 6th gear

My brother was a mechanic at Ancliff’s Felixstowe depot,I remember going up to stay with him for weekends and he’d take me down to the yard so I could sit in the trucks or take me round to TFS (Transport Ferry Service, before it was Townsend Thoresen) to pick up tanks that had come in from the continent.
The workshops/yard used to be on the docks right next to a pub,The Little Ships, and if the yard, office or workshops were deserted then you could always find them propping up the bar. When the new yard was built, complete with tank-wash,then they could be found propping up the bar in The Routemaster Motel.

I remember the trucks were Seddon’s,Atki Borderers and they had a few Scania-Vabis 110’s which were quite rare then, all day cab’s (I think the Scania’s were on an ‘H’ plate so that would put them around 1970 vintage.

I remember quite a few of the drivers there, they were all good drinkers but a good bunch of blokes. One driver in particular was a guy called Ken Cleaver who was a Yorkshireman,he and another driver (Reg Ablitt ) were the first to get sleeper cab’s.They were Seddon-Atkinson 400’s with 240 Gardners in them,I went with Ken on a trip to Chippenham just after he’d got his new motor and it was a trip of a lifetime for me.We met up with a driver from P&O Roadtanks based in Felixstowe and I had a ride with him in his Scania 111 sleeper and was reluctant to get back in the Seddon-Atki! From then on all I wanted to do was drive a Scania, which some years later I did.

Sadly Ancliff’s closed down the Felixstowe depot some years ago,the yard was taken over by Newell & Wright from Sheffield and most of the old Ancliff drivers are no longer with us,Ken died about 7 or 8 years ago,but I did have the oppurtunity of working with him on containers during the 80’s when he drove for OOCL who at the time were running a few trucks of their own.

Thats sound Andy, I just liked to see it, whoever its was

Mal.

2800 DAF’s. Now you’re talking. Would go off the top of the speedo given the chance and more cubby holes and storage than you could ever fill.

i remember when my old man got his 2800 daf from bourne commercials, upgraded from a 2600 with split screen even i had a arm rest in the passenger side!!

Work Shy:
Saw a F88 on the M62 near Leeds(e/bound) last week, pulling a container, the speed it was going I think it was loaded.

Charles Alexander dissappeared into TDG.

I think MacPhersons has just re-emerged out of TDG, as they seem to have dropped the green paint scheme.[/quote

ed.

Charles Alexander one of the best hauliers in the country, TDG want shot for closing them down.
