Old livestock hauliers shropshire

Not Shropshire but I think this is a ‘cattle wagon’ thread now isn’t it?

I love it anyway …

Where was I? Oh yeah, found these beauties on the net - hope the owners don’t mind but they’re too good not to share

I think that’s a little Commer in the colour snap and note the distinctive Thames Trader in the bottom photo

they are to good toshare gardener, like the saunders ulveston and I no who Charles alexander are but did not relise they had cattle trucks.

Hi Gardner 120 brilliant photo’s thanks for posting

It’s amazing how many “names” in the haulage game used to run livestock vehicles. My old boss, who ran both livestock & general until they closed, reckoned that the reason hauliers gave up livestock was more to do with the difficulty in getting money from farmers than any of the diseases!

The Leyland Retriever of M.E. Saunders & Sons was an early release of the Ergomatic cab.

Here`s a photograph of the Retriever , a 1/50 th. Corgi model , with a scratchbuilt 3 deck container I made.
By co-incidence , I am starting to build a model of the John Stable Leyland Comet.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

That’s a beauty mate - reminds me of our Super Reiver

Hi charlie , i cant remember what wagons Tomlinsons used to have , yes Poxens they were well known back in those days .
Is that John Cooper from Crowle ? , i think but not sure he may have given up stock work , as has Griffiths from Suckley - they used to have a Atkinson 4 wheeler on stock work years a go . Peter Badger appears to be the main haulier in Worcs at present , though Gilders are frequently at the Markets as well
by the way charlie does Market Drayton still have a market , thanks regards Keith .

I can’t remember them Charlie. I know of Cadwalladers of Rodington. I was up at Gobowen on Monday, then came back down to Telford town centre. We did get a few pics, but either the sun or spots of rain stopped us getting many.
Cheers Dave.

I put trde plates no and headed north on m5 at 45 miles a hour, I got it to glouster and engine mounting broke so dumped it and hitched home.

Hello Charliemjp, sorry for not thanking you for your reply before now, been a bit hectic!

I guess the Bedford was from Express Dairies at Honiton? If so, you must have gone right passed my Mum & Dad’s at Fenny Bridges on the old A30.

Regards, Andrew.

even saviem, , ys those trailors were ideal for the job. I rember once we had been I rosslare 2 days because bad weather. I rang the port to see if they were taking us , and to my surprise they said yes. when we left port the sea was unreal but thse trailors never moved. Geoff was a very clever man and our worst ttime was when we lost him at 53. I still say we would still be going if he was at the helm '. keith hope your ok the lairage at holy head was some one elses but we did use it a lot. thanks saviem and Keith keep writing

Evening all, Charlie, spent many a happy hour with Geoff, and Alma, real people, and so typical of the industry that I remember…full of “real” people!

Cheerio for now.

[The quote ‘we would be still going today if Geoff was still in charge’ I do that Geoff would have something to say about this, bearing in mind his brothers who were so unsupportive, negative, without any foresight, any without any business experience and very selfish. This confirms Geoff’s belief that their could only be one BOSS in any company. Look at what he created in his short life, from leaving the Royal Marines in 1946 to creating a company with over 40 employees and assets which included company shares and property in both the UK and Ireland, the later I have benefited from in the recent years. I was always very supportive of his projects and always looked for new business and was guided by his vast experience when it came to different ways in which we could diversify and, as he always said ‘make good profits’ Geoff always had faith in his choice of employees, ‘bring them in young and educate them in the Geoff Parry way of doing things’ this always worked, and even today you have the proof of this on this web site. Charlie MJP is proof of this. The M J Parry book which is now being published will put the ultimate read among those who have any comments on the demise of the famous family company…that’s all for now…watch this space…

I shall be looking forward to that , bet it will be a good read especially if charlie as got any thing to do with it . thank you Trevor .
