Old Firms in Oxford Area

Would that be the Oxford Canal in the foreground?

Yes it is. Strangely the works never used it. In the top left you can just see the Kidlington-Woodstock branchline. The haul road across the picture is long gone but the overgrown exit onto Bunkers Hill opposite the “Blue Circle Houses” can still be seen.

On the subject of “old sites” and the mention of Cannons, is the clay plant at Baulking still working?

Not sure about clay, but there used to be a Fullers Earth pit out that way when I was a kid. Sounds like another hole in the ground for Earthline to fill in.

Just had a look on 'net and the Baulking Fullers Earth quarry is shut and backfilled/flooded. Closure dates dffer but seem to be late '90s early 2000s.

Anyone remember seeing this Beast about?

If that side door in the body was access to a Luton-top sleeper? It took a big chunk out of the load-space :open_mouth:

Any chance is could’ve been repainted orange?
If so it still works occasionally towing out lorries that’ve become stuck on the tip at Sutton Courtenay. She towed out a fully loaded 8w roro that was down to it’s axles plus a possible broken diff last Friday.

The roots of the Bennie quarries.

Chris , yes I recall the wrecker but not the dodge , but I saw a topic some where saying it was a parts van or some thing .

IM sure the wrecker driver was a chap called BOB from Oxford who has now passed away .

Could well be the one! I remember seeing it about years ago, can’t have been that many in the country let alone Oxfordshire!

Hi Steve, I thought that when I took another look at the pic’ later about possible parts van or some kind of Demo’ wagon.

Durham Services A1(M) last week. fair old tonnage of National Grid tackle, had a chinwag with the driver.
Oily.

Hi Oily ,Johns wagons are always turned out well, and that wagons is most likely to be on its second life, they never buy new .

Nice to see a general haulage company ,not logistics .

Jakey

Just found this tidy truck of Johns .

I remember those pulling out of Crendon Concrete when I was a kid.

If you want to see the closest thing to a un-spoilt General Haulage yard you will find nowadays, pay a visit to Werrell’s yard, compared to todays concrete/tarmac spik & span hi-viz P.C. depot’s of today it’s still a step-back in time

You mean like this Chris when it was still G. Cannon & sons up at Johnsons farm in the village of Milton??

Great proper haulage yard shots ,

Hauled a fair few loads from there before Cannons undercut us. Fuller’s Earth is a type of clay, by the way, as is bentonite.
