Old Firms in Oxford Area

BigG-Unit:
Hi Mucka, If they were skip firms they would be after my time around those parts, but I would love to know more about them. Any chance of more info on them, the more detail the better for me. and it might help jog a few memories of others. That’s the beauty of all this, you never know where it might lead to ay.

Will try to get some pics as Smiths hire B & Es’ tippers got a Merc Axor 8wheeler and a Merc Atego 6 wheeler. They’ve got a nice “almost GWR” Chocolate and cream livery on their cabs.

Here’s a pic of Smiths Concretes’ Cassington plant (their original plant, built 1959)
Pic taken from the top of the aggregate bins

M G b:
sorry don’t have any pic’s only wish I did as my dad had M+Ms first lorry a GUY big J 6 XBW590M.

Was that new to them? Only Smiths had some wagons on XBW prefix. M and M are virtually all Daf fleet now but they do have a Merc Atego skiploader on an 04 plate. David Partridge is the TM there, his family ran the truck dealers at Cassington, now Mudie Bond Merc.

Hi BigG-unt, and Oiltreader and others,

Your comments re Morris Motors transport department, very interesting, one individual name best forgotten perhaps !! yes once the new massive Unipart building opened at Horspath then gradually H & M took over more of the spare parts work and moved to Pony road. Curtis also did some work as well as Bains ? of Dunstable or Luton (check the earlier thread/photo) and Glendennings of Shotley Bridge also got in on the act with the traffic to the north east.

Yes thanks for the info about Oxford vehicles in Nick Baldwins BRS book, (now reprinted by Nynehead). Bob Tucks book, “Carrying Cargo” (available on Ebay) has a fascinating chapter on Oxford and other car transporters.

Seriously though, how have we, that is you, me and all of us, all allowed it to happen, a once great transport manufacturing nation reduced to a service economy, all for a handful of silver.

When I make that final trip down the old A38 in the sky, there will be a cavelcade of AECs, ERFs, Fodens, Dodges, Traders and all, plus the odd BMC car transporter, all to a fanfare of Gardners, Perkins, perfect double-de-clutching, and with the odd snick of an Eaton two speed axle thrown in.

Hopefully thats a while off yet.

Another 1960s firm has just come to mind who were very much involved with work out of the Cowley car factory was Howard Tenens of Swindon, crated stuff to the docks etc, the motors were a dull yellow or beige from what I can remember.

Hope that’s not rude!

B&E Transports’ Axor 8 wheeler, tipping rubble at Gill Mill Pit this morning, just for you Big G-Unit!

Anybody remember Lampreys of Banbury? I think their old shop/offices wasn’t far from the Market Square as there’s a whitewashed building near the Castle Quay shopping centre with “Coal,Cake and Corn merchants” written on it.
When I’m next in Banbury, I’ll get a pic of it.

Yeah remember them the ran hell of a lot of Bedford’s.

Anyone got pics of Wychwood Brewery/Brakspear trucks? Recently they seem to have a variety of liveries running out of the old Eagle Brewery site.

Phil Hickmans’ Daf has been uprated from 360 horses to 361!

Howard Tennens ran alot of Big J’s and Marathons when I was on for HW Dines doing the same work, they were always known as a cowboy firm as I’m sure Dines were.

Yes probably! Took a load of concreting ballast to C Parker & Sons yard at Marsh Gibbon around 2.45. Then went to Dewars Farm Pit for a load of stone to the M40/A34 works via Middleton Stoney (didn’t stop in THAT layby!) and Weston. Was sat waiting to tip beside A34 for about 10 minutes while they checked levels. My ticket said 1360 ton so far today for that job. Wasn’t on my truck, still got the old 4000 series. Where’d you see me?

Going around Bicester ring road between Buckingham rd and Banbury rd.

What were you driving then? I wasn’t making music with the crash box was I?

I was in a White DHL Volvo with a Blue Curtian sider on, And no I didn’t hear any music. Is there a bloke still at Blackthorne called Malcolm he was there when I ran in there from Hardwick and I think he was in the Premix plant at Ardley as well years ago.
