I think ponce was the word mate, from what I can remember of them.
In the 70s I delivered veg from Bedford to the Oxford area, to Fyffes at the bottom of Headington Hill, Harold Hicks and Hicks & Son, and Den Blackwell, there must be some publicity pics of the motors that Hicks were running.
I started off with a little Commer and around '74 a Scania 80 4-wheeler which was a head turner for a veg motor at the time, I spent 3 days a week around Oxford with about 10-15 drops each day starting in Summertown about 3.30am when a small convoy of yellow Double Diamond/Ensor ERF LVs would thunder along the Banbury Rd. heading into Oxford.
If I remember right Hicks & sons were green motors and Harold Hicks, broke away from the family firm, with a striking livery of maroon & cream. Was a long time ago though.
This firm has been mentioned before, but I don’t think this pic has been on. Borrowed, yet again, from Bubb’s Scrapbook Thread, ( what would we do without him!) Lovely ol’ motor!
Anyone got any more?
BUMP!! As I thought I’d be able to see if there was any interest in this thread over the weekend but got knocked for six (well eight actually) by PASTTRUCKING!
Does anyone know where these were based and were they anything to do with the John Allen factory at Cowley?

Berkshire Vale F10 that i tooled around in for a while, then FL10 that I got brand new. The “Wendy house” actually went quite well, but what were Volvo thinking of with that cab!!!
The photo of the berkshire vale F10 brought back some memory,s for me,i knew Pete Stevens an Jim mulford who started b/vale.They had a garage in harwell village where they repaired cars to start with,I called in there one day to see them and they had a damaged marathon in the back yard. When i saw the liverey on the damaged door i realised the lorry was from simon int an ex middle east truck that was very badly damaged.Pete an Jim repaired it and converted it from left to right hand drive. They later had some F88,s and leylands,Petes brother Roger Stevens worked for them,i meet Roger a few times when he had an F88.Last i heard Jim was driveing a coach.
reference Pete Stevens and Jim Mulford they are still about, Jim still drives coaches on a part time basis and Pete looks after the delivery (and uses Jim on occasions) for new vehicles for Mudie Bond Oxford the Mercedes dealers including motorway servicing vehicles for Amey through Mudie Bonds old sales manager Mick Shirley who used to be transport manager for Radclives of Faringdon back in the early eighties.

Thanks for the info chazzer,Mick Shirley that name rings a bell.I think he came from stanford in the vale, back in the late 60,s he worked on the motorway when they were building the M4 at wanborough near swindon driving a crane.I used to work for monks of warrington then up at membury.Back in the 60,s Jim Mulford,s mum had the crown pub in harwell village,i was going out with Pete Stevens wifes sister,Rob Campbell owned the garage in harwell that Pete and Jim ended up with,Jim was mad on trucks and i think he still owns a mini cooper s that he,s had since the 60,s.
Windrush mentioned that he drove D704 PWL (ex Smith and Sons Foden 6 wheeler). My Dad had that wagon from new. It must have been re-engined as it originally had a ■■■■■■■ 220. Dad still rates it as being “one of the best they’ve ever bought”. It originally had a Neville Charrold 14■■■ steel body, and was way too big for muck shifting. Dad got moved onto an 8 wheel Foden B501 AUD (with Gardner 270 Turbo) as a result of the last recession, he said this was the best truck he’s ever had!
SAYS A LOT ABOUT MODERN TRUCKS!

Suprised no old Tuckwell drivers on here, bigish firm in the '60s but had a bit of a reputation! Well tippers! A lot of blokes had “Hell Drivers” chalked on the tailboard but not having seen the film I didn’t know what it was all about. They ran nearly all A series Bedford’s then and seemed to have a new one in the showroom at the agents down Botley road constantly. The wagons took a bit of a beating so their own workshop was kept busy with repairs and staightening. I remember one chap known as “Skinny Bore or Ball” I think, seemed to have more than his share of dings and scrapes so the boss had him in, had a talk with him and said they were giving him a brand new motor as they thought if he had something to take pride in he would keep out of trouble.
Early one morning in the first week, he pulled out of the yard, turned onto the Cowley road, ahead of him was a milk float, the only other vehicle on the road. He started to overtake then in his headlights he saw “milkie’s” hand stuck out of the float cab, then a row of milk crates! You can guess the rest!! Smack in the middle of the bonnet.
Tuckwells old yard is now a full on builders merchants, can’t remember the name. As far as I am aware Tuckwells now runs out of Radley sandpits on concrete mixers. No general haulage and only a couple of mixers.
Tuckwells are still based at Radley. They dont dig gravel anymore but they buy screened as dug ballast from Smiths Bletchingtons Gill mill quarry and cart it to Radley and wash it. They took over Oxford Sand and Gravel a few years ago and most of Tuckwells tippers now carry that livery. Tuckmix Concrete are still running aswell.

Priors did have some big trailers, don’t know his full name but anyone remember Big Eddy that was on for them for years■■?
I think you mean “Big” Eddie Harrison. He drove for Priors for years until Percy Prior retired. Eddie went on for AW Cleaver and then left to work his last couple of years to retirement for Smiths Bletchington. Eddie worked past retirement until he was made redundant last year. He’s recently been taken back on driving a Y reg 8 wheeled Foden covering a driver on long term sick leave. Eddie was still going strong yesterday as he was following me along the Witney Bypass!

He told me of the time Prior had bought new trucks for his F88 drivers. Can’t remember what make but early DAFs or Marathons I think. Eddie and several others refused to drive them so Prior had to put his newer drivers on the new trucks! Sadly Percy Prior died 2 or 3 years ago but a lot of his old employees attended his funeral so Eddie told me.
