I only remember one cafe in Wellesbourne, I think Lincoln Farm was over on the A452.
Must agree that the Salt Box and the OK at Kelvedon were two of the very best.
One of the biggest was the Mayfield on the A6 near Garstang huge digs as well it was
like Little Glasgow in there. Another cafe just across the road from it a wooden building
good grub but can!t remember its name
The Mayfield is now the Crofters Hotel, the one that was across from it was the Famous Dirty Dicks.
Dave.
A sad story in the news yesterday brought back more pleasant memories.
As soon as I heard of the head on collision between 2 cars which took 6 lives at Billsthorpe crossroads I thought of The Limes which was a favourite haunt when I was on Bulkliners and frequenting that road up and down to Ollerton.
Sure enough in the filmed report there was an interview being conducted on the lorry park with the cafe in the background.
Glad to see it is still going, they used to do a fine roast in there lunchtimes.
some of these roadside cafes that have dissappeard or if you are not sure, there is a crackin new tool to use on the latest google earth download which is free.you can view it now thenclick on a button then use the slider to travel back in time to view how it used to look,i think some of the images are limited to 1999,which is a shame really but its worth a look
earth.google.co.uk/ you can use it for roads aswell,e.g the old a1 to the new a1 (M)

Any of you longtime truckers got any memorys of bobs cafe at kidlington. I remember the fireplace in the centre of the floor.I used to call there 30yrs ago when i went to basingstoke via coventry oxford and newbury.I also remember the tower cafe at basingstoke.
We used to load out of one of the two compounds behind Bobs hence some weeks we would be in 3 or 4 times most weeks or live there if ferrying cars up from the factory. I remember the fire place and the juke box they had that also had a screen showing the singers, quite novel at the time. Rember big May & Anna they used to run it. We used to sleep in the big house next to the car compounds, it was bit on the rough side. I used it between 1963 & 1970
Your right about the Limes Spardo good food in there, there was a good one further up the 614 off of Blyth roundabout, I think it was called Jane’s.

Last time i was in janes was 8yrs ago and the food was good then, pity bout the parking.Dont know weather she,s still goin cause ive since retired. At the time she was in dispute with a neihbour across the rd which resulted in her getting ordered by the courts not to allow any trucks to come or go between 7.00pm and 6.00am which was causing a lot of hassle for her.She eventually had toput gates up and lock them between the said hrs.
You got it Dave the last time I was in there Was about 10 years ago, she had the problem then there was a sign up in the cafe, telling you what time you could leave in the morning, and you had to turn the fridge off, as you said " pity about the parking" and the outside toilets were a bit grim, I never parked there over night.
Spent many a night on the cafe lorrypark in Wellsbourne running between Durham & Chippenham Stock Transfers for Wavin. Jaynes cafe on 614 Bawtry had another single name mid 70s to 80
s but old grey cells can`t remember it?

Yes I remember Jane’s as well, but I think at one time there was yet another not far away from her on that stretch from Blyth junction.
Whereabouts are you nowadays Altitude?
Yes David I think your right, I seem to remember one not far away from Jane’s not that I have been in it, it was closed before I went that way, but I’m sure I can remember seeing it closed down and empty.
As for where I am nowadays not too far from you David, we are near Lanouaille been there for six years now, it gets better we are both members of Phoenix, as they say small world we have got two great dogs from them.

We often pass that way through Exideuil on our way to our Dutch friend, another Phoenix fosterer, at Nailhac near Hautefort where she has 24 dogs

Big Leggy,
Think you are right about “Freds”, seems to ring a bell! Also rememberdad parking at Boxmoor for breakfast and dad leaving his cab unlocked, and windows open in the summer, try that now!! In case you remember them, my old man worked for Home Counties Petroleum Ltd, Oxford (Mobil), he had a Scammell Highwayman when I first started going with him, then AEC Mammoth Minors & Mandators.
adr
Yes I remember Home Counties Petroleum !
I worked out of Buncefild for Shell Mex & B.P. (as it was then) – I used to do a shift of 4x10hrs nights followed bt 4x10hrs days (0600 to 1800). On nights we used to service the A/D’s but we never got further over Oxford way than an A/D at High Wycombe, mainly it was an A/D at Watford or Aylesbury (also rail fed). Consequently I’m afraid I never got to know drivers from your way unless they called in to Shell depot.
Big Leggy,
Dad did 23 years on Home Counties, last job before he retired, they closed the Oxford depot in 1985, the old man was 62 then so with 23 years service he got , shall we say, a healthy pay off! It was like early retirement to him after a lifetime on the wagons, he needed the rest by then, he was a good un, forgot more about wagons than I will ever know! 3rd lot of cancer got him in the end 4 years ago, petrol job not as good now, then you had time for a cup of tea & a yarn, now they not got time to take a leak!
adr
Even though I never knew him I’m sorry your dad never lived longer to really enjoy his retirement !
A lot of guys I worked with on petroleum tankers have died to soon especially the ones I knew from “National Petroleum”, they used to add something called benzine to the fuel as an additive – I’ve often wondered if there was a connection !!
You are correct it used to be a 101% job with plenty of time to complete your work safely & definitely no rushing !! Always time for a “cuppa” on our way back to the depot/canteen !!
