Old Cafe's

The mechanic:
Do you older guys remember cafe’s from Glasgow to Carlisle.
Chrissie Ritchie’s,Blackwood. The Star at Lesmahagow. The DAK. Cairnlodge Douglas. Heathergylle,Lindsay Tower, Crawford Arms, and merlindale in Crawford. Elvanfoot Cafe,(earlier still, Telford Cafe.). Coatsgate, Nethercleuch Lockerbie. Kirtle Cafe Kirtlebridge. Moss Cafe. I think there was also one in Kirkpatrick Fleming. I forgot the Valleyfield at Abington north bound.

Remember most of them, one i think you missed was the rosebank at gretna.

Dave

Dave the Renegade:
Just had a look on the transport cafe website, says that the " Hollies" has been a transport cafe since WW2 DafDave, also says it was a cafe for travellers before 1933, so it beats the " Lazy Trout " which opened in 1937.
Cheers Dave

Thanks for the info dave,i didn,t think it had been open that long.

Dave.

also there used to be one on the a5 at norton canes near to the turf island, that reopened as a little chef which also shut, but has recently just reopned as an indian resturant theres an mg garage on the same site ?

curnock :
Just been talking to a mate who still lives in Burntwood and he said that one was the Jubilee. He can’t recall the name of the one down passed Shire Oak but remembers another one further along Chester road, where the Fina garage is now, opposite Cromwell Commercials. Mckelvie’s had a yard there and there was a cafe next door. He doesn’t know if it had a name but they always refered to it as the “Chester Road Cafe”. Thats going back a bit though ay!

Ah thats it mate, looking in a bit of a sorry state ay. There looks to be a fair bit of ground behind it still so don’t know about the land slip story. Would love to know why it has stood like that for so long though. Thanks for posting the pic and do let me know if you can shed any light on the other one.

Anyone remember Truby’s at Kidlington? not a very big place but had a big reputation!! Made the newspaper headlines once or twice!! Years ago now though. My dad, who was on the road from the 20’s to the 60’s reckoned you could get anything you wanted there and, if you was unlucky, something you didn’t want!!

It was in Kidlington on the corner of the old Bicester road I think it was,on the right as you went towards Banbury, where as Bob’s, which used to be called Bob Browns at one time, if my memory serves me correctly, was out of town on the left, good pull in, big parking area. Is that the one you mean, that’s the one I used but think he closed down after the Drivers strike. :frowning: Not too sure though  Think I better have a lay down.

Hiya big g bobs was on the right as you came thro kidlington from coventry. It was distinctive due to the fire being in the centre of the cafe, does that ring any bells.
Dave.

Yeah, think we are talking about the same place as I was was talking as going from Oxford. Don’t remember too much about it, sort of took these things for granted without paying too much attention.

My fond memories for hanging about to make hours up or leaving lorry there for dodgy was the Border cafe at gresford,Nr Wrexham, The Shamrock between Shrewsbury & Telford (A5) And the Sunset Penkridge,They were the days.

The Shamrock on the old A5 was always busy, now a small business park, last time I looked. Killed by the dual carriageway, that is a good link to the moterway network that has helped Shrewsbury. Pity Hereford won,t learn and do the same.

Cannot remember Trubys in Kidlington, can remember Bobs it was north of Kidlington after the Airport turn off. Used to load cars out of one the two compounds on the top side of the car park. Got some photos if I can work out how to put them on line. When stuck used to stay in the house in the car park it was a bit on the rough side. When I was a kid used to stay in the Orchard in the centre of Kidlington it was ok but our clothes used to stink off the parrafin heaters they used in the bedrooms.

I’ve just had an interesting conversation with a friend off mine. His dad was a driver in the 50’s etc, sadly he has since passed away. But my mate has been going through some things and has come upon Old Dig’s cards from when he was down the road.
He is going to bring them and let me see them. I will scan them and either post a album on my site or put a few at a time on here.
Cheers

transporter man:
Thats where I remember it as being. Can you remember about what year that would have been and what cars they were?
