What about NCB,thatâs got two meanings.
Alan Spillett the transport artist does prints and cards of a lot of the old cafes. I got a few, one of the Windrush with wagons parked outside, also the Jungle cafe between Kendal and Shap, plus a few more. Have a look on his website, Roadscapes.

Any one remember the tower cafes, there was one on the A38 between Gloucester and Bristol.

Yes dave i remember the one at basingstoke, what a dump that was, crap food as well.
Dave.
What was the cafe on the A38 between Bristol & Gloucester â hard to remember now - somewhere near Whitminster (lay-by outside ?) Perhaps memory playing me tricks after all these years !
I do remember a âpubâ in Sharpness Dock (on the Severn) that was virtually a transport cafe as it was only drivers I ever saw in there ! Anyone else know it ?

I think that you are mistaken there Dave. There was never a âTowersâ on the A38 but I think I know the place that you are thinking about - where the caravan transporter is (was) now and there was a filling stion in front of it. I seem to remember that way back in the '60s it was a tourist rather than transport cafe and even that did not last long. Gossington Bridge or Brookâs on the right going into Gloucester were the favourite stops in thos days. The only 2 Towers were 1. on the A3 nr. Basingstoke and 2. the slightly better one at Beenham on the A4. I never used the A4 one very often. Much preferred The Ridgeway (Percy Gilham), The Golden Arrow (sometimes) and Jocks at Colnbrook⌠Having said that, there was a very nice little wooden cabin opposite a long lay-by beyond the flowered mile at Twyford. I called in there a few times in my time.
Just remembered. It was called The Haven.
Big Leggy.
That was Gossington Bridge.

Thanks for that charlie i couldn,t remember were the other three were.Wessexman says the one dave was thinkin about on the a38 was the haven,i wouldn.t know as that part of the a38 was unfamiliar territory for me.
Dave.
Gossington Truckstop reopened in 2007, was in there just over 12 months ago, have heard its now shut again.
I have a print of a Moreton C Cullimore of Stroud 8 wheeler tipper, a micky mouse Foden outside the Tower on the A38, Maybe some of you are right about it not being a transport cafe. I used to go by it a lot in the fiftys with my Dad going to Avonmouth.
Its now a hotel I think, I,ll have a better look next time I go past.
If youâre talking about Stainmore, I donât agree at all. The original was an oasis on a freezing night with its big open fire warming the cockles about to drop off in those pre-heated-cab days. It was only much later when it closed and then the ex-pump office became a caff that the standard was more modern.
Maybe youâre not talking about Stainmore though, because I know they were there in the big freeze of 1947 and were a haven for the drivers stuck in the drifts. The photos were on the wall to prove it. But if you mean another place, I canât think which one.

Not the best in the world, but a welcome sight on a Doncaster to Glasgow night trunk when it was snowing in the early 60âs. Seem to remember an old hill farmer sitting in the corner chatting to drivers, think it was maybe warmer then his cottage.

Dave, remember the Jungle very well, I seem to remember a sign over the counter with the legend "Ask for Big Bertha here " or is my memory playing tricks ? When we were on night trunk over Shap I remember a company from Liverpool who ran 6 wheeler Albion Reivers (Keenanâs â â ?) You would be sat in the Jungle with one eye on their drivers, if they made a move everyone would jump up and hurry out to get in front of them. It was a long hard pull if you got behind them, and no chance to overtake. On the subject of Cafes I know David Swarbrick who owned the The Brock on the old A6 north of Preston
David gave me some pictures of lorries and drivers who stayed there in the Mid eighties. It is closed down now but still operates as a guest house called The Glen Darvel. The breakfast room is covered in pictures of the firms that overnighted there in the past. David still runs a garage on the site of the Old Brock cafe. he intorduced me to Ron Clarke whoâs family ran the Mayfield cafe a little further north near Garstang, and who could forget Dirty Dicks at Garstang
I have a page on my website dedicated to the Brock Cafe with pictures and a short history, follow the link on my Home page.
regards Big Al
Hi big Al, I have seen your homepage a few times, haven,t been over Shap in the old days, only in the last 20 years or so,always like to stop on the top and look at the stone tribute to the drivers who worked and travelled the road, especially the chaps who tried to keep it open in the winter.
Cheers Dave
