In your part of the country when the A5 was a main trunk route there was also
Crows Nest on A5 followed by 3 Sisters
Clives at Hockliffe (Woburn Turn)
Freds at Pottersbury (now a something sausage)
On the A41 near Aston Clinton there was Fred’s cafe
Watford there was The Dell Bricket Wood
Past the Busy Bee on By-Pass there was Wally’s (B4 Spiders Web)
On the “old A5” there was one in Markyate but the name escapes me !
I also recall one near the Wagon & Horses at Brookmans Park !!

The 3 in the markyate dunstable area were, the ranch[adjacent waggon and horses] the 3 sisters [both now defunt] and watling st cafe and filling station, still going i think.

Dave.

dafdave
You are correct - and between Watling Street Cafe & Three Sisters was “Crows Nest”, last time I past that way it was now an Indian I think !
Another on the A41 was John’s Cafe after Waddesdon.

Was that the one on the left going towards dunstable, had a small concrete parking area?

dafdave
That’s the one & it was like parking on the side of Everest.
One of the reasons (besides Mways) that a lot of these cafe’s closed was the lack of parking space when trucks & trailers just got bigger & heavier !

dafdave
Sorry I misread your missive – No it was on the same side as others on A5 heading away from M1 towards Dunstable !!

I can just about remember 2 cafe in glousetershire area there was the Staverton grill between Cheltenham and Gloucester and the Windrush on the A40 Does anyone know what they are doing on the old windrush site they started building years ago a hotel i think but nothings happened for a few years now , and its been mentioned before brians at ripple junction 1 M50 A38

The cafe at Windrush was OK but the little bonny woman would throw you out at 10 o’clock and it was out to the grotty caravans at the back.(no sleeper cabs those days) what a lark. I only suffered it once or twice then found the old army camp at Stratton St Margaret on the way into Swindon, run by friendly Asians, a little austere but warm and dry, you all sat together for your scran like at a holiday camp.

I was under the impression that The Windrush Cafe in the 60s was open 24 hours a day.
On a couple of occasions we would " Borrow " an R.A.F. Morris J2 and drive down from Little Rissington for a late night feed.
The night trunkers from South Wales on their way to the smoke used to use it a lot and you would often see the Black and White coaches going past all hours of the day and night.
I bought my first copy of Headlight there and a pair of night driving glasses  . Does anybody else remember those ?, they had yellow lenses and I was convinced that they worked. :unamused:
B.T.W. there is a great website for Black and White Coaches, well worth a look. @ blackandwhitemotorways.co.uk

Does anyone remember the Winforton transport cafe on the A438 between Hereford and Brecon, also the Storey Arms on the A470 on top of Brecon Beacons a haven for stranded lorry drivers in the snow. Also the Don cafe, top of Glynneath pitch A 465 ,brilliant breakfast. Those were the days.

Anybody remember a couple of old uns on the A4 in Wilts ?
Ridgeway and Golden Arrow ?
Wasnt driving lorries in those days but done a few tyre changes at said cafes.

I remember the Winforton cafe Dave, not far off the Leominster turn-off. Was the Don near that NCB crossing at Hirwaun?
I haven’t been up Glyneath since the mid 70s but what a poxy road it was.Looks like it’s dual carriage now.

You are quite right on both counts Chris, Winforton Cafe was in the village on the left, a black and white place. Don cafe, as you say not far from NCB just down the road onthe right going down the hill. A465 now dual carriadge way right through to the M4 bypassing most of the old places including Neath and Glynneath.

My memory is still semi-active then Dave
I hated using that A465 through Resolven etc. If I was running home on a saturday or sunday from Baglan Bay I would sometimes go down to Pontardawe and go to Brecon past Cray reservoir and onto the A40 at Sennybridge just for a change. A long way round but I was on hours anyway and it’s nice scenery  Without consulting my map it was the A4067 from Pontardawe I think.

I have done the same Chris. I used to take roadstone down to tip anywhere in South Wales and fetch slag back from Margam, if I came back empty I used to have a detour, don,t think it would be much further in those days, its much quicker now, dualed all the way back to Hirwaun which is bypassed to come back to Brecon, It is the A 4067 back to Sennybridge, most of those places have been bypassed now, quite a good road.
Cheers Dave

Whilst we are down in South Wales Dave do you remember a cafe near a roundabout on the A48 near Briton Ferry or in that area. One of Wim Vos tankers parked on the slope round the back of there in the sun and his load of styrene expanded and was running down the overflow from the top of his tank. The place stunk summat terrible and the bloke who ran the cafe played hell with the driver who went outside, kicked some gravel into the puddle of styrene and away he went.
If you had a cheese sandwich in there he could slice it so thin you could see through it.
There was another cafe on the way to the coking plant at Cwm near Llantwit Fardre and it had sawdust on the floor. Not much of a place :open_mouth: but the tea was ok.

Didn,t stop at many cafes on the A48 ,used to run up the 48 from Bridgend back to Port Talbot.
Only cafe that I can remember using was Jonros on the A48 near Chepstow, now a Indian restaurant.
Did you ever stop at Little Hereford on the A456 ( closed in 70,s) also Fromes Hill on the A4103 still open and a good cafe. As I was on tippers on medium distance, didn,t always stop for grub as we carried it with us, but quite often being young and greedy used to stop for a good cooked feed Chris.
Cheers Dave

You got me with Little Hereford, had to get me map out . No,never used that cafe as I used to run from Leominster to Tenbury Wells on the A4112. I’ve never used the A4103 either Dave.Been in the Lazy Trout on the A49 many a time and wasn’t there a cafe at Prees Heath near Whitchurch,in fact I think there were two cafes together but I may be wrong with the location. :unamused:

As dafdave says Midway and Raven at Prees Heath on the A49 Chris. Lorraines just back down the road on the A41 used to be called the Halfway House. I go in the Laz\y Trout quite often, also the Midway. There used to be four at Prees, the Breckland which is now an Indian , the Cedars which is now a Little Chef.
There are as you probably know a few new Transport cafes opening, there,s the Lazy Kettle on the A5-A483 just north of Gobowen near Oswestry which has got a really big lorry park, also a Truck stop at Market Drayton Livestock market on th A53, which is a good thing with all the regs with digi tacho,s etc
Cheers Dave.
