Old Cafe's

Just a little report from my latest trip back in time.
Chez Paul’s at Doué la Fontaine provided us with great meals for 2 days last week with the friendliest of staff to look after us. Had my first taste of kangaroo, asked the waitress if it would jump off the plate and she said ‘no, but it might make you jump in the caravan though’ :open_mouth: Saucy. :unamused: Now if I’d been a bit younger - and alone :sunglasses: . Nice clean hot showers too.

Le Relax, a little routier where you park on the roadside at Saulge l’Hopital about 20kms south of Angers isn’t as good as it was, well they wouldn’t serve me at night like they used to so can’t tell you if the food is still as good.

Finally, another roadside park-up at Nanthueil on the D737 2 kms south of St.Maixent l’Ecole (79). Great meal for € 10 including wine and coffee. I’ll be there again.

The Airport Cafe on the A38 just south of Derby – probably the greasiest greasy spoon ever, the place was minging, the food horrendous, and the lorry park had the deepest potholes ever.

A good one was the Saltbox, if memory serves me right on the A50 between Burton and Uttoxeter (my UK geography is not too good these days)

Imay be wrong but you come off the a50 now onto[i think] the 5111 for burton, turn rightand the saltbox is about a mile down on your right at the lights

You are right about the Airport cafe on the A38 Hombre,it was the proverbial s------ ,scruffy staff, crap grub and toilets that stunk to high heaven. All this and pot holes too. :open_mouth: A better one was the Y-pass further down and also Atkins at Findern back towards Derby.
The Salt Box was also a decent place as well.Another two on the A38 were the Oakamoor at Barton-u-Needwood and the Tree at Alrewas.Wonder if any are still going?
Somebody will know…

Thanks Whoosh Whoosh

I have been racking my brains for the name for months now. I was getting confused with the Orange Tree on Pleck Road

Apparently this ‘Young Lady’ used to work in a Cafe near the Blackwall Tunnel in the 1950’s, can’t you just smell the Fried Bread gently simmering in about 2 inches of Lard

And what are they on the shelf? Woodbines or Seniors?

Senior Service I reckon.
Nice girl.seen worse.
There was one on the A1 who reckoned she’d only been made love to twice:-

Once by t’ BRS and
Once by Shell-Mex and BP.

As Malc said, the Salt Box and Oakamoor are still going, but my favourite was
the Tree, always clean and a decent non-fried meal at lunchtime. The Airport I
remember, but vaguely, maybe because if it was as bad as you say I only went
once. Used the Y-Pass as well and Atkins too, but that was a much later café
and a bit like an msa.

I took my first girlfriend for a meal in Atkins at Findern. You would think that I had taken her to the Ritz :stuck_out_tongue: She came with me in a TK Bedford to Walsall and we stopped at Atkins for our Dinner. Simple tastes had Karen

was that the one on the A34 by Great Wyrley■■?

and what about the Drome cafe on the A38 by Castle Vale in Brum?
stopped in there the other week for breakfast and found it was exactly the same as it was back in the 80’s when I used to go in there with my dad when we were passing on the way up to the sand quarry just before Lichfield on the A38

I got a bit confused, the cafe I was trying to remember was Kernels mentioned above.

The Drome is still open and still exactly the same as I remember it as a lad. The bloke who owns it lives near me, I just wonder when he goes home. I have never seen it closed and Fish and Chips at 8am seems a bit strange

Have just read Spardo’s post regarding his meal at Atkins. You certainly treated your women well David. You are what my grandaughter calls “Well cool” Well done that man.

You might get David into trouble with that post. It was just his quote I re-posted

I think David was even more romantic than me. I believe his wife was whisked her off to Italy in a truck :stuck_out_tongue:

i can’t believe no one has mentioned the compass at colsterworth crossroads, morleys at markham moor, the one at blyth who’s name i cant remember and the groundhog just north of donny where the A1M becomes the A1.
the coronation cafe in front of ken thomas’s yard on the A47 used to be a good one as well

She certainly was Malc, no Atkins for my lady, only the Bakehouse in a chauffeur driven (me) F89 met the standard. :unamused:

Routiers are still her first choice to this day, and any trip we make is planned around them. Sadly this last jaunt fell foul of the dreaded Christmas/weekend shutdowns, even Chez Jo was blacked out.
