Recognized the portobello cafe right away …stopped many a Sunday on route South …there was a good clean public toilet on the same side just further down the road !!!
Sorry Larry forget the name of the Stanedge cafe ,it could well have been the motor men’s about 18months ago there was a accident on M62so I cut through Huddersfield and came over the A62 and it is still there I am not sure of the cafe part but it is still a petrol station

The truck stop on the a5at Rugby was a cafe called the rendezvous before the truck stop and before that it was called Tubbies does any one remember that one ? he was in the old Headlight Magazine at one time for receiving stolen goods which meant he bought swag of the drivers ,I don’t think many will remember this one ,circa 1964 or thereabouts

Remember it well “dexterboy” a right “dive” we used to do the odd changeover there in the early 70’s when we were busy,I would run a trailer down to one of our lads through the night. It was never a cafe I used when I was up and down to London in the late '60’s nor did we stop there when I was on the Brady Octopus and trailer.Much preferred the Jet back up the A5 a bit but they weren’t open 24 hrs.Cheers Bewick.
Was the Jet cafe about a mile from tubbies at the top of the hill ? That was another decent cafe ,was in there the week it closed it closed because beside lack of patrons the health people kept coming in with new regs every month or 2and it was costing to much to keep updating my route was mainly Birkenhead to London worked for Whartons meat haulage we used A41-A5 M1there must have been at least 20cafes on that route and we tried them all and then the M1 finished at I think it was Markyate so there might have been more after that into London now nearly all gone ,I loved the old cafés met people in them I was friends with for years. I remember Bradys where they the Barrow Brady?

You’re right Larry, it was or still is just a Cafe. A White House set well back from the road and you used to have to go up steps to get in. I passed it about three weeks ago, it looked a bit deserted, no lorries in the parking bit, although there was somebody working I did see.

Yes mate I used it in the 70s,a bit of a dump and the park wasn,t much better.Anyone remember the other one, coming south the café was on the left, park all round it and the pumps across rd,also a small parking area.It was on top of the hill before you dropped down to tubbies.Think it was run by a mother and daughter I used it for yrs but the name escapes me.

Sorry all just seen dexters post.

Regarding Stanedge cafe sorry to disagree but it was a filling satiation and cafe the reason I remember was at one time I limped into there on Diesel fumes only and it was coughing when t got to the pumps luckily for me a older driver approached me and asked for a lift to Liverpool of course I said yes filled up started it but would not fire , but this guy produced some spanner and got it going ,4times it air locked but we got back to my depot I told the fitters and they took it into the garage seen the boss ,same motor Sunday for Somerset ,took the driver to the pub and bought him a couple of pints ,went home ,came in Sunday hooked up and off I went 100 miles later broke down again fitter came out could not get it going had to wait for another unit ,that motor an AEC Mercury was always breaking down after that they changed the pump to no avail When I first started on the road I I never filled up till there was no fuel that was a really good lesson learnt I never done it again that’s why I am certain this cafe had fuel pumps, coming up forwards Oldham it was on the left it was the last cafe on that road there must be a Olham or Huddersfield older driver who can name this cafe for definite

Well the next café on the left heading towards Oldham was called Standege Services which open in 1958 as far as I can remember, Then the next one was just over the summit opposite to the Floating Light Pub & Power Petroleum Filling Station, Called the Blue Peter next to the reseviour, The Floating Light Filling Station was very old, The fuel was pumped by hand up into large glass vessels then gravity fed into your fuel tank, They didn’t have electricity, Regards Larry.
I have had some more thought on Motormans Café, & it was never a Filling Station only a café, & it is still going, Regards Larry.

It was the Jet cafe Dave and it was run by the Turton family the Old man and his missus plus three brothers and a daughter,“Tufty” was the eldest son and he ran the filling station on the cafe side and his brother Mike and wife ran the filling station at the other side of the dual carriageway the other brother was called John (I think) and he ran the cafe with his Mother and sister.Tufty was a right miserable ■■■■ probably as a result of working 23 hrs a day on the filling station !! I mainly dealt with Mike and his wife for DERV usually on the way back from London,I could buy derv cheaper off him than from my home based supplier !!! In 1970 or thereabouts Mike won about £70 odd thousand on the Pools so he left to live in Worcestershire somewhere and the rest of the family disowned him.Cheers Dennis.

Yes “dexterboy” it was Bradys from Barrow and the two A5 cafes we normally used for breakfast was The Hollies and The Jet depending on how early we were away from Barrow on a “flyer” to London usually for a dock and a ship that was “closing” that day.We used to get in among Suttons four wheeler Atky’s and trailers as they used the same cafes but had started probably 3 or 4 hours after us from St.Helens,we used to blow them off with the Octopus I don’t know what weight they used to have on,mainly stillages of Triplex glass for Fords and Vauxhalls I think,we regularly had 27 ton of British Cellophane on the waggon and trailer and some times 22ton of strip steel for a Cable works at Blackheath then we would reload with Tissue reels from Bowater Scott in Northfleet for the new Barrow mill which hadn’t started making paper at that time in the mid 60’s.Great days long gone but not forgotten Bewick.

Certainly you could do 70, but in my memory that wasn’t the maximum. I had a Kew Dodge with a Perkins 6354 towing a 26 foot 4-in-line and that happily cruised at 75 down the M1 and I don’t remember worrying about the law. The blanket 70 limit for all vehicles definitely came later.
BTW, only Hadfields from Ashton under Lyne ever overtook me on the flat.
