Do you mean this castle in Douglas Bay Dennis? No way would any bugger live in that, especially when t’sea goes right over t’top in a south - easterly.
That Taklift crane is there to put it back after it goes adrift in heavy seas.
I can see my local on that photo…The Queens Hotel.

Another old cafe on the A5. Neals Cafe Markyate, Was this one near J&H Transports depot, ? Im sure there was another one not to far away, but I cant recall the name. I stayed there once when I loaded corn flakes out of J&Hs warehouse for the north east.Used to stop in Markyate in the late 50’s early 60’s I think the cafe was called The Three Nuns I am sure it had Nuns in the name, I think its a truck park now on the right side of the A5 about 1/2 mile from M1 Junct 9
The other one in Markyate nr. J & H’s would be The Ranch, and the “Three Nuns” would be The Three Sisters(aka 6 ■■■■!) nearer to the M1 junction on the left going south on the A5.Cheers Bewick.
Well I nearly got it right the sisters could have been nuns!!
I remember staying at a cafe on the A34,a massive place as I recall in 1964.The Durose I think it was called open 24hrs. good showers which were few & far between in those days it was also a filling station ? near Newcastle u Lyme.
Re six ■■■■ Dennis, nice to see you bringing the thread back into context. regards kevmac47

Any one remember Tims cafe on The Close, opposite Arthurs Cooperage. Next door to the Sasania Cold Store. Tim as I remember used to work for Currie & Co who owned it ?
Sorry to be picky Fryingpan. but I don,t think that Jacks Hill at Towcester was ever a Towers.
The Towers were at Basingstoke,Bigglesade and Beenham on the A4.There was another Jacks Hill
at Arrington on the A14.If I,m wrong I am sorry. If I,m right then me old brain is still working.
Regards Charlie
No problem Charlie. I found some info about the Tower Cafes from a source I’ve now forgotten. It also mentioned a 5th Tower but, I can’t remember where. ( stupid whats it called, oh yes, memory)
It also said that the company HQ was in Alton. I see that you reside there. Any chance that you have any connections with the firm? If so, any info would be welcome, opening and closing dates, photos etc.
Re. The Towers Cafes; A1 Biggleswade…A4.Bath Road , Woolhampton, A6.Bignels Corner, A30.Winchester Road, Basingstoke, these were 1964.
Do the Towers (in any guise) still stand at Woolhampton? I run out of Grundons at Colthrop occasionally and if they still stand I’ll keep a look out next time…
Sorry , cant help you there its a place I was never in,if Bigglewade was anything to go by, it would be rubbish. Im sure it was still going in the 70s.
The one i used in the early 70s at basingstoke was a real sh-thole,i was running batts from clifton m/c[exide]to lansing bagnalls and that was the only place to stop.
regards dave.
The A1 and A30 Tower Cafes were still in business in the early 80’s. Not sure how long the A4 one lasted but, it stood derelict for a few years in the late 80’s. Now it is a caravan dealer, the entrance and exit seem to be the original ones from cafe days. It was eastbound, between the A340 rbt. and the dual c/way. All 3 are demolished now.
There is a survivor from the old days just beyond the A4 Tower, on the w/bnd side of the dualled bit. Mac’s Cafe, dates back to the 1930’s and, has pictures on the wall from past decades.
The A1 Tower at Lower Caldecote had a portakabin type cafe there in the 80’s/90’s, called Grizzlies. Gone now and houses occupy the site.

I stopped in Macs Cafe only last week, its a step back in time walking in there it feels like a Transport Cafe should, & not a bad breakfast either, the full works for £5!
I think I’ve posted this before but anyone remember these Oxfordshire ones?
The San Remo;A40, Eynsham very close to the Evenlode pub
The Whitehouse(?); Hanborough Road Eynsham near to Wytham View/Spareacre Lane-the village water tower was nearby.
The Quiet Woman; Southcombe (old A34) Chipping Norton and now an antiques/tea shop.

Another North East Cafe; Remember The Port Services Bitley By Pass, not very popular as most drivers did not use the by pass, the reason for this was it was quite a heavey pull North & south so going through Birtley & C,L.Street was in fact quicker.
Larry, what was the name of the cafe on the quayside at Newcastle behind Spillers, served some good grub, I think the guy that ran it was named Pete? I used to go in there when I was tipping at British engines.
It was Jimmys St. Lawrence cafe, he was a ex driver from Orrell & Brewsters Gateshead, he had a pools win apparentley, thats what started him off.
