Nearley opposite the Blue Peter cafe was a filling station & a pub called The Floating Light the filling station had no electricty / the pumped the fuel by hand up into large glass containers marked off in gallons then gravity fed it into your tank Im sure it was Power Petrolium in those days 1957 cheers Larry
There was another cafe on the 62 built late 50s if my memmory is correct open 24hrs Stanage Services half for Transport & half for Tourists in later years I was over that way & it was called the Eagles Nest some sort of Hotel I think Regards LARRY PS. I forgot to mention the sheep used to walk in to the cafe in the winter looking for food.

hiya,
Larry we all remember the Jungle Cafe at the bottom of Shap but how many of you (and you’ll have to be a bit ancient) can remember The Eagles Nest at the top of Shap a couple of old buses backed on to each other at one time but always a cracking cuppa and breakfast always stopped there in preference to the Jungle and when going South gave the brakes a chance to cool down before dropping the old wag and drag down the bank.
thanks harry long retired.

Yes I remember the Jungle Cafe its a caravan sales place now the first time I went over Shap northbound was 1957 & it was thick fog or low cloud it was nerve racking to say the least after the 2 buses it was the Selside Cafe beside the phone box Larry
I would bet most of you lads would have seen it like this or even worse years ago.
MOTORMANS CAFE
Aye I have been stuck on the Standedge in the winters like this and as things progressed the put a sign up on Whitehall Rd, Leeds if it was b locked so you took the A58 to Tomorden turn left & come down into Littlebrough & on to Manchester then they put a one at Marsden a bit late then no where to go Cheers Larry
Would that be the old Blackstone Edge rd into littleboro Larry?

Larry wish Parky all the very best from me. I hope he’s out and about very soon. ( I think the nurses will probably breath a sigh of relief) cos he always had an eye for the ladies. If he’s got that cheeky smile on his face you will know he’s been up to his old tricks. Regards kevmac47.

Yes, Peter’s at Hatfield is long gone, it was a nice cafe but I wasn’t too keen on the digs, nylon sheets ! yuk!
Another popular cafe The Oakamoor Barton Under Needwood on the A38 at Branston I stopped there several times & when it was full they sent you along the road to a bungalow to sleep then back to the cafe for breakfast it was decent in the 60s but the last time I was in 1999 it had gone down hill rapidley , is it still going I wonder ■■?. Regards Larry
Yes the Oakamoor is still going but doesn’t seem to be too busy ! sadly its the last one on that stretch of the 38, my favourite was just before there at Alrewas, The Trees, now a British legion club.
