Does anyone remember the wooden hut opposite the old snipe pit in Audenshaw, I used to go in there with my Dad back in the 40s/50s
Hi rocky7
I remember the cafe opposite the snipe pit it was owned and run by my uncle & aunty,(George & Gwen Stanfield) my dads brother. There is still a wooden hut there even today but no longer a cafe.
John
Hi John, another cafe in Ashton has only just closed down and that was Albert Challenors, in Trafalger sq.
HI rocky 7 yes that right it has been there for years that one.I noticed it was closed the other week when i went passed.

Bob’s cafe on the A45 near the centre of England, used to to be Quite good in the old days, but in latter years, got a bit grotty.
Hi Stanfield. It must be a while since you passed the Snipe, the wooden hut is long gone, the whole area as been re built on now… I only live round the corner from the snipe. “when I,m home”!!!
Hi Rocky 7
I mean’t to say there is still a wooden hut next to the snipe pub near where the cafe used to be years ago.Yes I know it’s all rebuilt round there B&Q Currys etc just like everywhere else these days.
Now this one will test you, and as it depends on my memory about 45 years ago I might be wrong. In the 60’s I did a lot
of vegetable work, all the major markets all over the country. We also carried a lot of potatoes mainly for Crisp Factories.
At one stage we were taking loads to Montrose and back loading potatoes to Smith’s Crisps on Copse Road, Fleetwood.
As mentioned previously I used to stay at the Mayfield near Garstang but here is where my memory plays tricks. I am sure that
as you came into St Michaels heading towards Blackpool there was a cafe on the left (I think there is a shop/post office there now)
It was like an old fashioned green house and when I asked the owner was told it was one of the original gondolas from the victorian
big wheel that was on the front at Blackpool (circa 1896 to 1928) Any one shed any light on this one ? regards Big Al
Another theme on cafe’s, the old coach cafes, There was several I would use, one was off the j20 as you went towards market harborough, j12 off the M1, another on the A1 near sandy beds, but I have been in many more.
There was a good coach cafe going east out of kings lynn on the a17[i think]had lace curtains up at the windows, anyone remember it,10yrs since i was in it.
regards dave.

That sounds like the Farm Cafe. net curtains, home made scones and screaming kids
Never been in this one myself, but did anyone use the “wooden shack” style place beside the A1 at Cromwell near Newark, and is it still opperating.

TIPIT if you mean the one which was on a bit of the old road southbound it was very good used to have table cloths on the tables and all the food was home made and as far as it still being open I could not say as it is a few years since I have been down the A1

Handy for a dodgy as well,if you parked there the wagon was hidden from the A1 southbound and you could slip across the carriageway to a lay-by opposite on the northbound and flash yer log book

Eyup Harry.
No mate, sometimes you’d be away for a week or a fortnight weekended.Other times you could have a dodgy five times a week if you were working local in Lancs, not far over Woodhead to Sheffield. The advantage was that Sheffield was pretty central and easy to get a lift to.Scotch Corner,Immingham,Grantham,Leicester Forest,Lichfield and Warrington was an acceptable area to log book it home. You were only getting 8/9 hours in on Lancs locals so you could be parked up at 4-00 pm and on your way home.
Good job there were no cab phones or trackers !

The one near cromwell on the A1 is still going I was in there the other day, it is run by an old guy and his son. I have been going in there for years but I dont know his name. You get a good full breakfast for £4.50.

Can anyone remember the cafe on the A48 somewhere between Briton Ferry and Margham. It was at the side of a roundabout and I remember one of Prossers’ old AECs MK3s losing a coil there. The bloke on the counter could slice “see through” cheese.
Also another one on the road from Llantrisant to the CWM coking plant at Llantwit Fardre on the R/H side.It had sawdust on the floor but the snap was ok.
Is this the cafe that became a Macdonalds when they built the motorway? If so you can see it from the elevated section as you go over Britton Ferry. It used to have a pointy carpark, easier to get into than out of. They did a good breakfast but would not serve bacon

While talking about going to Lincoln in the 60’s, there was a cafe in Newark which was open all night, on the road out from the centre onthe A46, the bobbies was always snooping at the lorries parked out side it.
