Nice one!!! I had just left school then, I remember the trucks, my old man and a driver called Kieth Goodwin drove them, not sure who that is driving that one though, somebody out the garage? It was one of the best jobs in the yard at the time, they got the same rate as the artics and the same drop time, only they did 15 or more drops a day, every night out (on paper), truck parked under the old flyover at Ulceby, a licence to print money, shame those jobs have gone, the money is still there it just dosnt filter down to the drivers anymore.
I just got this off the old man, last one and still full, Lord knows how many years that been behind the shed
hes 80 now, so it must be nearly 30 years, thats what reminded me about the Unigas lorries.
Steptoe, are Marshalls still going, they were on the old A18 on the r/h side out of Scunthorpe towards Brigg. They ran tankers and marketed LPG as “Marlin” in the 70s.

They are long gone now aswell, their yard was on Motlash Hill Scunthorpe and is now Skeltons Transport. They had grey Leyland roadtrains, and before those they had Atkinsons. Up antill quite recently one of their old tandem gas barrels was stood in NETV, it had been there for a long time. I bet Sniffy has a picture or two.

Can’t find anything for Marshalls or Marlin LPG, Presume they just bought LPG from one of the gas plants and sold on under under their own brand name or did they have their own LPG storage.
I wonder if they were taken over by another company like Flo-gas or shell, or did they just fold ?

Hi sniffy, they used to buy it off Conoco at Killingholme and market it themselves.
I used to see Marshalls in Bitmac Scunthorpe, all gone now.

When did Bitmac close Malc? I was in there regular in the 70s.They had a place in Llanwern and that was still going in 1994,both plants made toluene, benzene, xylene amongst other products, they also seperated wet methanol for Shell Exploration at Bacton Norfolk. We used to do a round trip, pure out,wet in,great job, could be on it for weeks in winter.Barworth Haulage belonged to Bitmac IIRC.
Hi i don’t know if anyone has seen these photos of the tankers we had on the Globe contract in scotland from the 1970s.Notice the state of my overalls, thats when we had to do manual dips lift manlids & climb on top of tanks h&s would have had a fit if they seen what we used to do, but we never gave it a thought as it was all part of the job we just got on with it. MATT
Here is a photo of the bison i drove for globe in scotland, the bison replaced the mammoth majors. This was a good lorry to drive it had the fuller road ranger box, never let me down in the 3 years i had it. MATT.
An old globe mandator from the 70s in scotland, This was replaced by a buffalo and if i remember the buffalo had 2 or 3 engines replaced at leyland motors on london road glasgow. the driver used to tell me he would rather have his old mandator, Anytime i drove the buffalo i thought it was a good lorry to drive. MATT.
Nice pics Matt, owt to do with AECs will do for me.
Yer overalls could do with a wash .
Hi chris,They were the days when you had to lift manlids climb up on top of tank etc,my overalls were always like that i had to remove them before i sat on the seat, you very seldom see a tanker driver with dirty overalls nowadays changed days

Aye Matt, and a splash of ethyl acrylate on yer boots ensured you got yer own table in the cafe.
I’ll bet that Bison went well with the Fuller box.I would have loved one in a Mandator.
Chris, The bison was a good lorry to drive and perfect for the work we did,First thing in the morning before i started the engine i had to pull the engine stop out and turn the engine for 10 seconds to prevent damage to the turbo,It was the same before shutting it down you had to let it tick over for 10…20 seconds, I always did this and never had any problems with this lorry,When jet petroleum took over globe this bison went to conoco jet somewhere in sunderland( i think) I always wondered what happened to this lorry, maybe someone knows (an ex conoco driver maybe). MATT.
A few more oldies
