OHS

I ran down to Istanbul with a cockny lad called Reg Cook he was driving a OHS red long nosed non sleeper mack 6 legger.
Reg has family in ■■■■■■■ and used to run a firm called ewin and cook running to nigeria.
I knew Reg quite well and i wonder what happened to him does any of you lads know him he used to talk about Kenny (egg on legs) a lot
If you met Reg you never forgot him complete skinhead and he told
a good yarn

I met a guy in the Londra on one trip driving an OHS Mack. Most of us in those days were in our 30’s,this guy must have been pushing 50,looked like an ex BRS driver, flat cap, scarf, donkey jacket.Says to me,“How far is this Teheran place? When I started this job, fella told me it was a couple of days out of Z/brugge,so I got the wife to cut me a big pile of sandwiches and a flask, they ran out two days ago!”
Gave him what help and advice I could and thought that would be the last time I saw him.
Wrong!
He turned out to be quite a proficient M/E driver and I saw him several times on subsequent trips,he got right into the job and could give a good account of himself in a ruckus.
These tales keep coming back to me from the mists of time.

hi to you , on the topic of ohs trans, myself and andy mc maclaine were the first two drivers to be hired by orhan sertel, the turkish owner of ohs. freddy mellem and jock bell, george fardell, and nick carter and howard leigton and jimmy beigent joined later. we had some great drivers on the fieet. i was the first driver to start running down to pakistan taking supplies to the british construction marples ridgeway, who were building a large elevated highway linking iran with pakistan. we all were running to iran , syria, jordon, iraq, and kuwait , i’ve stacks of photo’s and will post them on the site later. i spent nearly 8 years with ohs, and met many many drivers from astran, davis turner, cardiff international, top hat trans. and so many other out fits that were running to middle east, meeting up in places such as the londra mocamp at istanbul and the national at belgrade and the telex motel in ankara was always a good laugh and good places to pick info on route problems etc. i’m new guy to the site so i would welcome any messages etc. and of course so sorry to hear about howard leighton…one of the best!! i’m curranty driving for a west country outfit trucking hanging meat to europe , but still have many memories of the days trucking to middle east…we were a breed apart!! john lewis :sunglasses:

Welcome to Tnet John, good to have you on board, and get them pics up here asap,we all want to see them.

love the story (myth?) that when redcliffe roadways took over the mars work to kuwait they had the first load declined because the mars bars were brown…

where they ran the fridges, OHS had got into the habit of not bothering so the bars bloomed white in the higher (but not hot) temperature - if that makes sense?

OHS had two of these trucks and were used solely as UK shunt motors. The picture of the 4 wheel Mack above it is one that I drove from new.

As far as I can remember, and there was an article in Truck magazine about the dust cart Macks, at the time, they were used to pull trailers from Dover that were abit on the heavy side for the twin screw F700’s in the UK. That was just what I’ve read, and if anyone knows any different, I would like to here it.

As very few if any of the main fleet were taxed for the UK thes Dustbin Macks were used to pull loaded trailers to and from the docks and to do UK pick ups and deliveries.
