O licence just to rent a truck

its to prevent people like you from attempting to operate vehicles when you obviously have no idea how to

Really?

This guy runs a business and plans to borrow a truck for the day to do a larger load once in a while.

Excuse my naivety but how that does prove he has no idea how to operate? Bit presumptuous if I may say so.

He stated he wanted to hire a truck and park it kerbside outside his house overnight, that’s not how you operate trucks now is it  That’s why operator licencing exists.
Not me making presumptions but the OP presuming he can do this

There’s nothing wrong with that really it’s just the busybody neighbours and government that get upset. I would point out thousands and thousands of people do this every year when they hire a 7.5 tonner to self-move.

and I would point out that no hire company will hire out a 7.5 t to anyone who doesn’t hold an O licence as the OP discovered as is now moaning about, the reason being that a 7.5 needs to be operated under a licence and will be impounded even if it belongs to a hire company :bulb:

No nay sayers here, but a bloke doing a self drive home removal once in a while is not a commercial activity. However how would Own Account Driver feel if I went out and hired a lorry and undercut her

The thread’s about restricted so the competition angle isn’t as relevant. There’s no transport manager issue either, the only issue with hiring is down to whether the vehicle’s kept someone suitable during the hire period.

If the real issue is road safety I would have thought it far better that a seasonal or occasional user of lorries hires a modern well maintained vehicle when they need it rather than keep some old shed sat around rusting between occasional use, which is often also an eyesore for neighbouring businesses. As I understood it the stipulation that o-licences should have vehicles specified was an attempt to prevent the o-licence for sale trade to persons unfit to hold them and I would suspect that most of those after an o-licence, because they can’t get one, would be after standard rather than restricted.

Why is this a moan and not a legitimate complaint, it’s clearly a case of double standards. I bet the majority of 7.5ton hire business, even now 15 years from '97, is to people with no o-licence and have probably never driven anything much bigger than a car in their lives.
