I can see why it’s never happened to me.

truckyboy:
If its a reportable offence, the hospital/doctor has to notify them anyway so dont worry, and get well soon.
You can be prosecuted for being ill or injured!!!
Regardless of that, it’s still the driver’s responsibility to notify DVLA. Saying “I assumed the doctors would notify them” is no defence.
Sam Millar:
Hi all,So I’m in hospital with a collapsed lung. I just turned the wrong way and it happened. Seemingly very common in young tall skinny men. My question is, do I need to inform DVLA of this?
muckles:
Get well soon Sam, it happened to my brother many years ago who he was in his early 20’s, he’s over 6ft and was reasonably skinny at the time, although not as skinny as mea slight breeze would knock me over, need a force 10 gale these days
He had to abandon his truck in a high street, and get into an ambulance. He was told exactly that same as you, about it being quite common for young, tall men.
Yep it certainly did, in 1991, never happened since, just had a night in hospital then a couple off weeks off work. I thought I was having a heart attack, pulled the truck to the side off the road and phoned for an ambulance.
Get well soon Sam.
Take it steady for a couple off weeks and you’l soon be right as rain. I was told to blow gently into a balloon, dont if you’ve been told this or not .
Muckles you need to work all those pounds off, just like I do

Sam all the best… 6yrs ago I bent down to feed my cat, and right lung collapsed… Spent a week in hospital, 4yrs ago I coughed and left lung collapsed2days later under the knife to basically get lung glued to chest wall… Basically everybody has a sticky substance between lungs and chest… And mine wasn’t sticky enough so opened me up scrubbed chest wall then applied a powder that turned into a glue substance … Left lung won’t collapse again …doc was wanting to do right lung and I declined… Due to pain I’m still in 4yrs later (nerve and muscle damage due to op)…
Christ, puts all the little ball aches in to perspective don’t it?
Re my last post… When my lung collapsed 1st time (feeding cat) I just thought I’d pulled a muscle… Then as breathing got harder thought it was bronchitis so when work phoned to say my load was ready off I went …
Drove from Buckie n.e Scotland to Thorne by donny… I did think of phoning a ambulance but little voices in my head said how stupid I’d look if it was just bronchitis,
so carried on but breathing got harder and sorer so completed my run and asked boss to get me 1st backload up road, eventually 3days after feeding cat I went to my local docs and within seconds he was on blower for ambulance to take me to A&E,
Next time when I coughed and lung collapsed drove straight to a&e, I knew straight away it had collapsed pain in back and chest and obvious breathing difficultys
Had to get my op as know had 2 collapsed lungs which where both prone to collapsing ( not a good thing if both went at once lol) so had the op, but as I said earlier I decline the other lung op due to constant pain and numbness in chest even after 4yrs.
Every 3/4months I have to get steroid injections into nerves on spine area to numb the pain (wears off in a month but not allowed more than 3 of these proceders in a year)
I contacted DVLA but was informed it wasn’t a matter they are concerned with

I’m currently recovering from a collapsed lung (and dislocated shoulder). The cause of mine was pretty clear though - being knocked off my motorbike! No need to notify DVLA. I used to be young, tall and skinny too
i would love to get a motorbike, but everytime i think about it i read stories like yours and think about the muppets in cars out there and it puts me off,my favourite bike is the yamaha XJR1300,second is the suzuki GSX 1400,both similar in looks, modern but looking like a 70s muscle bike,
dont let it. there isnt a rush like it in the world.

To put it in perspective, I’ve been riding since I was 16, and I’m now almost 55 years old. Prior to this crash, the last time anyone had me off was in 1986. And this was the first crash of any sort that had me hospitalised in nearly 40 years on the road.
I don’t think the risks are anywhere near as bad as many people think.
Just go for it - get yourself some proper training and wear decent kit.
