Here’s an odd one. Does anyone remember (about 1990 ish) I think an owner driver pulling a reefer liveried Norfolk cold stores or something similar, with IIRC a red 6 legger Atkinson Borderer? I know it sounds bizarre…maybe it was just a bad dream

You’ll be thinking of the Atkinson ‘Searcher’, converted by John Killingbeck to ‘Venturer’ spec - it’s preserved now and in good fettle

I think Terry’s borderer finished work last year, I know one thing it is a flying machine, I struggled to keep up in the mondeo I had a few years back! :astonished:

I remember that Article in Trucking International years ago, it’s definitley not a bad dream! it had an ERF roof deflector grafted on to it. I think it had a repaint a little later and was white with a blue sripe round the cab. Cant think what happend to it, but i dont think it’s the same motor as Godbolds, as i think he bought that from Knowles and grafted the axle on himself.
The man who ran that old Atki on Bernard Mathews also had, i think, a Scammell Crusader with part of an F88 cab weldedon the rear. Certainly liked to be different!

It was this one

Looks a bit different now! seen this at a couple of show’s and never even realised, just that it was an ex Killingbeck flyer. Thinking about his Crusader, i’m sure ive seen a pic of it on TN somwhere.

Hiya Kindle
I met Freddy Barham in Diss a few months back and he looks well. Terry Godbolds Atki used to run up to Bury every day during the Beet campaign - wondered what had happened to it. I worked with a guy called Godbold (no relation) who had asked about the motor out of interest and it seems it is nowhere near original mechanically - custom built for speed and pulling power. Wish more people did that. Keeps them going and makes you itch to have a go. My brothers outfit has just bought a 8 legger ERF A series from the IOM and I hope to see that soon. Jim.

The M6 would be a prettier place if there was more like this bobbing up and down it (and as Basil Fawlty once said whilst banging his head on the reception desk…nope, it’s not a dream!) Thanks for the great pic and info!

You’re welcome! And I agree

I remember this one well - it started life as a 6-wheel rigid moxer!

And there’s a short article in Commercial Motor about Terry Godbold, here:

I’d never realised, however, that he had more than one of these lovely trucks -

Apparently KSC999N is now livered as a Stobart motor in their museum, even though they never ran this truck.

Was it this one? At a guess I would say it was ex Spandler Brothers of Yarmouth as they had a couple of Borderers with sleeper cabs and ■■■■■■■ engines and the registrations were GEX ■■?N. This one has obviously had the high roof nailed on since, as the Spandler’s ones were flat roofed when new. Cheers Haddy.

This was one of his earlier Borderers, before he bought the Searcher/Venturer from John Killingbeck and moved up to 38 tonnes.

And that’s the man himself, standing next to it and wearing a red jumper

This could be the one Straight Eight !

Thats the kiddy!! Well done Haddy  , he loved a create a different looking vehicle did’nt he? There certainly were some weird and wonderful ‘home brewed’ sleepers about at the time
