Been doing nights this week and its insane. Left Trafford Park this evening, signs all saying M53 Shut j11-12. Then get to junction 7 and its shut there too. How many times do they need to shut the same motorway. How can you plan anything when the signs say one thing and another thing is happening on the ground. The way the roads are run in the UK is a joke.
Its the same on the A1 North and South near Newark A46 Southbound Nr Melton Mowbray + A46 Northbound Nr Syston Just depends what mood there in I think. Not to mention the M1 Lane closures, M25 exits closed does my Bungle in
ezydriver:
‘…Why are the many more night road closures these days…?’
Especially since ‘drive-time’ (a loathesome phrase)traffic reports continually rattle-off the same old school/shop-run bottlenecks for assorted Steve Wright, daytime brain-dead zombies, whole night closures prove beyond the faceless, local Government, ■■■■-splash “agencies” to reasonably manage
Not rattled at all here
Worst diversion I’ve experience was coming back from Blackpool to go south on the M6. The south bound slip road had been closed (5 weeks at night) and the diversion was sending trucks northbound. That’s all the way up to bloody Lancaster and back down again. Good job I had enough time before I needed a break. The A5 has had some nuisance closures recently too.
Rhythm Thief:
But the M6 Toll is not a road, it’s a business. It runs - like all businesses - with the primary intention of making a profit. Why would they open it up for free when the M6/M42/M40 etc. is closed?
m6 toll could be a completely new thread
anyway what profit ,it dont make a profit
no one uses it
,most sit in traffic on M6 apart from those with tags or company cars on expenses
i have a capitalist business idea
open the m6 toll for everyone 24/7
then put a load of advertising boards on the side of the motorway and on the bridges above the motorway ,some could be lit up (neon)
companies would pay a fortune
m6 toll road company would soon be making big profits
year after year , no jams on m6

Yeah, the franchise for Car Crash Carnage TV alone could be immense, eh
Even better with short-skirted Cheerleaders doing the Can-Can on every bridge too: Norks-out obviously

I’ve been running tarmac for re surfacing to both the a1 at tuxford and the a46 near melton over the past few weeks, I think the a1 job will be on for at least another week, not sure about the a46, it may depend when the budget runs out!
you can’t win with folk moaning, first it’s the state of the roads, then its why don’t they do this work at night?, so now we’re doing it at night you get the night trunk lads moaning as now what was an easy job turned more difficult!
one night last week as I know there were re surfacing crews on the M42,M40,M5,M6,A5,A46,A1,M1,A38
looking at the state of the roads this type of disruption could well go on for months
The most annoying aspect of it is the lack of clarity and information regarding closures. For example , what time will they close , i have arrived upon the scene earlier than the published closing time to find it already shut. Then what time do they re-open . I have seen signs telling me it was closed further ahead only to find it was open and flowing freely. And in all these cases it was for planned maintenance not for accidents etc. This lack of clarity and communication must be costing our employers millions of pounds per year in wages and fuel.
I used to listen to traffic radio but i can no longer find it , this used to keep me right upto date , does anyone know where it has gone to or has it completely disapeared , and why dont the radio stations put traffic bullitens out after 22.00 when there are still many of us truckers out on the road and most of the closures are taking place.
Having said all that , i have learnt to just take it in my stride , pour myself another cup of coffee and put on a good cd and plough on.
There are many things that can and do go wrong with the closures eg the traffic management that put on the closure only do so after a traffic count, which means the flow of traffic has to be below a pre set amount to even close the road, the weather, fog rain etc even accidents in the area during the day affect the time the night closures are put on
then there are other factors like mentioned in my post above the fact that there are so many roadworks taking place at the same time, which means any breakdowns either on site or back at the tarmac plant can hold up the job, the road plaining crew can dig the road out then a ■■■■ up back at the quarry can mean the tarmac is late on site, or due to a breakdown you can have all the tarmac on site before the road is even dug out!
which can mean it’s going to cold before it’s needed! and all that’s before you even mention human error and health and safety!
Moose , i appreciate where you are coming from but the point i am getting across is that there is enough overhead signs , radio stations etc for the authorities to let people know what is happening , whether its been bought forward or delayed. This is the 21 Century and i will know within 1 minutes of a goal scored at the world cup in Brazil if that is what i wish , so why cant i find out if a road is still open or has been closed.
I know what you mean lol, I only deliver the sticky ■■■■!
only the other night I had to divert miles out of my way just to get home after tipping in Birmingham due to roadworks on the m42,m5/6
I have no idea how we will ever know when the road is open or closed, quite often we don’t even get the correct address to deliver to, the quarry might be sending 400 ton to their own national contracting road gangs yet don’t know where or which way they are working!
Don’t mention the A14 what a road for closures!!! How come contra-flows have disappeared? The other night I got the chance to ask some Highways bods and they said purely it was down to Health and Safety and the EU, well pardon me guys they still use them in France - contra flows that is!

Surely the issue with contra-flows is the time it takes to set up/pack away just for a nights work? I have seen contraflows still used for long term carriageway closures.
As for the discussion about the M6 Toll, I often wonder if rather than fannying around with the managed motorway schemes the government might have just been better buying it out & taking down the toll booths given it’s clearly not doing the job it was built for & likely never will. Expensive, but surely that’s a better long term investment for road infrastructure?
