Kido:
Does anyone knows of any company looking class 2 drivers and willing to take on a newbie .
I would be prepared to travel or relocate to get a start .
Or recomend a agency that I should Reg with .
try turners (soham)…i’ve a feeling they take on newbies.they have a few depots.
I can understand what radar is saying about shelf stacking wages against a driver hourly rate comparison.
If you are driving for £10p/h 40hrs a week it’s £400 a week. No thrills that’s ur lot.
£7 p/h in b n m stores.
20 X £7 = £140
Rent rebate &250
Tax credits £50
Council tax rebate £30
Child benefits if kids £40
£510 total for doing 20 hours at B and M.
That’s 51 hours driving at £10 p/h plus 5 hours breaks would be 56 hours to cover what single person doing part time at B and M is on.
It’s ■■■■■■■■ the government subsidising all these companies.
The companies should be paying a decent wage not me subsidising it with my £700 a month tax I pay.
Ok I work for a supermarket driving the home shopping vans.
Im 29 and have no dependencies
I work the following hours
Monday 19:00-23:00 4 hours paid but after 22:00 the wage goes up by £1.50
Tuesday OFF
Wednesday 09:00-19:00 9 hours paid
Thursday 19:00-23:00 4 hours paid but after 22:00 the wage goes up by £1.50
Friday 09:00-19:00 9 hours paid
Saturday 09:00-19:00 9 hours paid
Sunday 09:45-15:00 5 hours and a quarter paid at time and a half
So thats 40 hours per week and I get paid between £940-£1000 every 4 weeks after tax and insurance taken out.
so every week after tax I have between £235 and £250.
I dont know what C+E drivers are on but thats a guide to base it against.
Thanks Thomas

So you are making about £6 PH after tax? I’m the same age also with no dependants and I think what the figures how is how the job market and tax system is heavily stacked against single blokes in ‘unskilled’ work. I don’t know what area you live in but £250 week is not much around here, not after rent, council tax, electric, gas, water, etc.
Is the job itself enjoyable or are the customers a nightmare?

I live in Devon, the job is not brilliant and some of the customers are nice. Some expect the world from you.

Montytom- Why are you driving supermarket vans, when you have a class 2 licence?
The only reason I am currently driving vans is because its a safe job to tide me over till I have completed my class 1. Once I have completed class 1 i will be looking for a job.

I drive artics, Mon to Fri, 6am starts and usually do a 9-11 hour day but averages 10 and half. Deduct breaks of 45mins a day and the rest is in the bank, earn double your takings. I deliver plant. As you can see its worth doing. I recommend Pentalver, Culina, Fowler and Welch etc to get a start and shown the right way from the off.
Just had a driving assessment at Culina for night work, newly passed C&E, they didn’t tell after the assessment if i’d got a job or not, so I expect a letter or phone call soon to give me the bad news probably, bad luck follows me recently hahaha
