Perhaps we will never know the full reasoning behind the change. As yet I don’t see a huge amount of advertising on here, but is it only a matter of time?
If the advertising is bringing in sufficient money to keep the site going?
And isn’t so obvious as to be distracting?
Good result !
Good effort… Hours of harmless fun for all.
I am amazed at how much, and how many young people, I have missed over the years without realising it. I have, unwittingly, confined myself to half a dozen threads merely by only clicking ‘your posts’ in the past.
So, I have spent over the last couple of days, hours, catching up on threads going back at least 11 years. Interesting, but also informative in the sense that the new ‘kiddy’ rules of censorship have rendered some of them unreadable.
Here are a few examples, modified for readability.
E scort
C ummins
C umberland (A whole county obliterated, no wonder Bewick was p issed off. )
F ags
D ick, but not Dicks
F art
Left h ooker (this was allowed on my American site but attracted wry comments )
S uck
And can anybody inform my delicate sensibility what was written here 6x4** ?
You’re right Spardo. And it is no longer just harmless fun for all. I’ve just checked back through the ERF (European) 1975 thread, which concerns a model of lorry that were only fitted with Cu mmins engines. Countless posts have been rendered unintelligible to the casual archive delver. It must be particularly galling for one of the regular contributors from Holland who was a former Cu mmins employee and whose valuable posts are rendered meaningless. I notice that he hasn’t returned.
Yes, we can learn new tricks to circumvent system stupidity but we are powerless to heal two decades of posts needlessly scrambled into gobbledegook (and I’d better separate that word into gob bledegook in case the brainless American Christian fundamentalists who invent this kind of crap censorship don’t like the word gobble - smutty-minded twelve-year-olds that they are - rant over.
EDIT to add that at least with TN it’s unintentional over-censorship that they will no doubt try to put right; and not in the least in the same league as Photobucket when they deliberately and spitefully vandalised everyone’s pictures
■■? is maybe three or more question marks
i am not sure if the username system is a person but i suspect not as my quote of a link someone else posted was removed and censored but the original post is untouched
having said that i think the real admins are taking note of our issues and reporting them back to the appropriate channels like all these things it takes time.
Yes, and I know it can be done because my path in this new forum has been eased by the fact that my current French, English language, general forum is based on the same platform that this is.
But one big difference. There is almost no censorship, in fact I can’t think of a single example, but that might be down to the fact that genuine swear words are hardly ever used. Only if it is essential to a joke or a quote of someone does it happen, and we know it won’t be cut.
The way to go for adults.
The censorship debacle is board admin controlled, not embedded into the software.
You’re absolutely right, a search of the discourse website shows that the auto-censored words are in the admin control panel under “Customize/Watched Words”.
If it helps the admin to sort out this auto-censor fiasco here’s a link to the relevant Discourse page.
So given time we can expect that C ummins will be usable again. That’s nice.
Maybe the Moderators should have their huge cash bonuses suspended until then?
The mods are as powerless as we are on this one. It’s the admin bods who need to sort this one out
i suspect that its not someone sitting there adding every single word and extension they can think of. It is more than likely an auto generated list that can be personalized and a overzealous ai system.
This is correct, the mods control panel is not the same as the admin control panel, the mods won’t be able to change the auto-censor.
I’m guessing that’s what it is, there’s probably a default list of censored words that needs to be personalised to fit the needs of the forum.
Here’s another one I’ve found: ■■■■■…
I was talking about finances and the public ■■■■■.
What we may put our loose change into.
Well Ғuck my old boots…
Doesn’t rhyme with ■■■■ does it?
Not really…
a small pouch of leather or plastic used for carrying money, typically by a woman.
“she had enough in her ■■■■■ for bus fare”
so it wasn’t bank then…
I’m just pursing my lips to see it’s a filthy thing to do
