Fair enough done that.Which part did I get wrong other than the screen position issue. The object size changes in the image then you estimate the approach speed when distance perception is just as important as approach speed.

It’s obvious that flaw remains in replacing, a 3d mirror image combined with brain and eyeballs all working together, with an inferior compromised screen 2d TV one. While the main mirror sideways field of vision looks like the silly narrow vertical US types.
An old school big square Bedford mirror was as good as it got. It’s another case of not broke don’t fix it.

You don’t need to sell me cf, I hate the things with a passion already.

How can an image, seen in a mirror be 3 dimensional? It is exactly the same as an image seen in a photograph or any other camera image, ie 2 dimensional.
I think.

Wrong. It’s exactly the same reflected image seen by the same two eyes and brain.
As opposed to one cheapo camera lens and dumb 2 d tv screen.

Here’s a clue look in a mirror at another mirror held in front of it.It’s mind blowing.Your eyes and brain correctly perceive it as infinite dimensional depth.
A non 3d camera/tv system to replace a proper mirror and human eyes and brain is just going full techno ■■■■■■ added to blind auto gearboxes.

I bow to the greatness of your knowledge, but continue to disagree with you.
Humans typically have iro 190degrees of binocular vision. This must mean that most stationary objects being viewed from a fixed point, can only be accurately assessed in two dimensions. It must be necessary for the viewer or the object to move though 270 degrees, in order for the three dimensions of most objects, other than circles, to be accurately measured.
For example, if you look in your trucks mirrors, (or cameras) at a vehicle coming up behind you, on a straight road, you will be able to compute how high and wide it is, but you cannot know the length.

Oh, also, I think automated manual transmissions are splendid. Even in the most demanding terrain I can drive along consuming a plate of soup or cereal without ever having to put the plate down to change gear. Marvellous. No more suspicious stains to explain when I get home.

I’ll give my opinion on mirrorless lorries once I’ve driven one, right up until then any opinion I give is essentially false and based on prejudice. Just saying like.

We’re all entitled to an opinion though mate, my personal opinion may not be based on real world usage but it’s an opinion formed of other peoples experiences (not prejudices) and also from factual considerations (i.e. do monitors require backlighting? = Yes, Is light pollution a problem and a concern for permanent night drivers? = ok maybe not all night drivers going by the twazzacks that drive round with a cab full of LED’s and the “look at me” interior light on… but me… = Yes)

The fact that it’s replacing a 3d infinite range finder, in the form of a mirror image combined with human eyes and brain, with an inferior 2d camera image isn’t an opinion.
Nor is the fact that they couldn’t create a 3d camera system with that type of range ability even if they wanted to.
So effectively they’ve replaced, a viable 3d system of rearward vision, with a viewing area of around the size of a 1970’s ERF A series mirror, but also reduced to a 2d image at far greater expense and unreliability. That’s progress.
Also be interesting to see what those TV screens look like with bright sunshine on them.

They stay on for 2 minutes after ignition is turned off.
Also a switch on passenger side and in the bunk area to knock them of for 2 mins.
Just read that from a Google search.
I really like the features to be fair.
Need to try them in the real world…

Mirror Cam is just another piece of technology like auto boxes, digital tachos, AEBS etc that we will all get soon, like it or not. No doubt all manufactures will offer mirror cam as standard within a few years anyway.
I wouldn’t want to go back to manual gearboxes and tachos now anyway, and no doubt will feel the same about mirrors when it all eventually goes mirror cam.

Totally get that Reef, but then we come to the age old problem of ten different people expressing ten different opinions. What I was alluding to is that unless one has used these mirror cams consistently over a period of time in different conditions then all we have is speculation as opposed to opinion.

Jeez, I’m going to bed now, looks like I’ve caught a bad case of that bloody pedantry disease that is so prolific here!

Fascinating. I’ve only had time to read through it once. Perhaps when I’ve gone through it many times, I might, might, be able to understand it.
Perhaps I have been guilty of being too literal in my own interpretation of “dimension”
Anyway, I’ll try to be like the Maoster, and reserve judgement until I’ve driven a lorry with cameras instead of mirrors, when I will be able to make an informed judgement. ( a somewhat unusual circumstance among some members, myself included, I think)

Personally I am looking forward to having a go in one, then I make a judgement after that. Why knock something you haven’t tried?

Removing the mirrors is a good start.

Just need to remove every other bit next. Some will no doubt get giddy over them sadly and jam their heads firmly up their TM’s arris in order to bag one.

I neither like or dislike it.

There’s a lot of new technology on trucks which seemed pointless or a stupid idea at the time but they are normal now.

I imagine over a fleet of 200 trucks having the drag reduced without the mirrors there is going to save a significant amount of fuel.

The screen positions mean your not taking your eyes as far off the road to properly check the mirror.

Is it something to go wrong? Yes. But so we’re a lot of things when they came out.

Oh and a believe with mirror cam blind spots and bling side reverses are pretty much a thing of the past. So there’s another positive.

Since when haven’t they had tachos ?
