Started around 2003, I had one but never used it as I didn’t return to work afterwards. I did revisit my old quarry a couple of years later to ‘see the lad’s’ but my card was out of date so (after 27 years there) they wouldn’t let me in! Never bothered trying again.

The MPQC card used to be EPIC. I had the plant operators one, late '90s. It was stupid, I had 3 different ones for the 3 different loading shovels at Gill Mill. One for my Cat 970 and the others were for the Volvo L120 and the L160. The same cab and controls just one machine could pickup about 1-2t more in the bucket. All 3 shovels had a steering wheel, 2 levers for operating them and almost identical weighloaders. Imagine the fuss if we needed a ticket for each make of tipper we might drive in the quarry…
I’m 18 and I have just passed class 2 is there much work on tippers for 18 yr olds

I know Smiths Bletchington took on 2x18 year olds and they’re still there, 2 years on. It’s not common around here, but you coukd approach some local independant firms or small firms with Hanson/Tarmac etc Franchises. One idea could be to approach groundworks and construction firms. You’d get tipper/plant moving experience then.
I started driving tippers in September last year, I have only had my class 2 for 12 months. Iv had 2 multidrop jobs and I hated them, both firms I worked for were a nightmare, I was all ready to give up driving and go back to working in a warehouse. But my old man sorted me a job out so I turned up to meet the guy, he sent me out with a driver for 2 days then told me he was happy for me to start. I’m driving a 6 wheeler and as long as I do 2 loads a day the boss is happy. I found that the hardest thing for me was the waiting round doing nothing for hours on end but I got myself a tablet to watch films on, without it I think I’d go crazy
Just a quick update, i started today spent half the day with one of the bosses then on my own this afternoon just learned that the tail is also a barn door Supposed to be shown how to use it as a barn door lol
Barn door tailgates aren’t overly common, I’ve seen a few demolition firms using them (less chance of damage) but most seem to be on bulkers.

A few muckshifter’s here use barndoors on eight wheelers, plus the lads moving large stone blocks for cutting have them.
