Er - 0700 until 2250 is somewhat in excess of the 15 hours spreadover allowed…
So I broke the law?
Radar, please don’t take this personally and get discouraged by one bad experience as I think this industry desperately needs new blood bringing in, but am I right in assuming that you’ve recently passed your test? If so (and I’m sure the likes of Rog will correct me if wrong) then I’m sure that you must have carried out some DCPC training? Did this not cover the basic legalities of what you can and cannot do? Did you not undertake some tachograph training also?
Btw, yes, you did break the law, and quite severely too.

When I arrived, no one was around. I had to ask where the office was. They didn’t even look at my license, I could of been anyone. They give me a set of keys, handed the porter the paperwork, told us we’re off to Aldershot. Next, no one shows me how the taco machine works. Its after I speak to an old chap who was really nice and showed me what to do.
On the way down I’m told by the porter that I’m supposed to help not only move the stuff but to also pack it in boxes as well. I signed up to be a driver here, not a removal man. I understand that as a driver I’m supposed to help out but I didn’t think I’d by having to do two jobs. We spent about 6 hours or so packing things and wrapping them then I’m supposed to drive the 3 odd hours back?
Whenever I’ve used removal men before, there has always been at least 3 of them. 2 porters and 1 driver. I’m seriously considered not even bothering to fill out the hours for this as it requires me to go back to the their office for them to sign me my time sheet. I started at 7am in the morning and did not return until 22:50 at night. I wasn’t told whether I’d be paid for the whole day or just the driving parts. I’ve tried calling my agency but no one to answering so I guess its early Friday hometime.
Basiclly, I’m now wondered what the hell I’m supposed to do.
Don’t take this personally but:
-
I think an HGV operator which has ordered an HGV driver from an agency is sort-of entitled to think that said driver will know how to work a tacho and not have to explain it to him; and
-
You knew you were going to a job driving a removal wagon and are then surprised/unhappy that you have to do a bit of graft packing and loading?
This is my first job. The only truck I’ve ever driven is the one I did my test in. Aside from that, I’ve never used of these machines before. I personally believe they should make taco’s and how they work part of the actual test. I have no issue with handballing. I understand that even though I’m a driver I will need to get stuck in. I do have issue with no being told what I was actually supposed to be doing. I was not told that I would be required to pack the items in boxes before they were loaded.

Yes, I passed it last month. I’ve never actually received any taco training. It wasn’t part of the Initial CPC I took, in the module 2 test all it had were questions relating to the EC driving rules and only basic taco stuff like that to fill in on them etc.
What is the punishment for what I did? Should I call VOSA and tell myself in? I was only told where I was going, not when to come back.
Left hand down!:

Well, having done one day I can safely say I am never doing removals again.
You were warned beforehand!
I blame it on being new and naive.

£100 Fixed Penalty assuming everything else is OK. That’s if you should happen to get a tug from DVSA. As a professional driver, it is down to you to decide when and where you stop for breaks and Rest.

Yeah, not a good start to your driving career. First rigid job I ever did was white goods deliveries and that nearly put me off it for life. Signing up to more agencies will sort you out some decent work, especially at this time of the year.
Regards your timesheet, what usually happens in these situations where you were unable to get it signed is that you fill in the hours on it yourself and then fax or send it to the agency who then forward it to the client to get a signature. What truckbling said above is correct. You’ll likely get 45 mins knocked off for your break which is standard practice so always make sure you take that as you’d be working for free otherwise.
As for going over your hours this is a big no-no and VOSA will have your pants down if you get stopped. Just hope that you don’t and ensure you stay within the EU driver hours regs at all times if you want to keep your licence and stay out of court.

Driving time, 8 hours, 47 minutes
Other work - 4 hours 16 minutes

15 hr duty time.
Started 07.22
Finished 22.50
What should I of done?
Your working day is 13 hours maximum, but you can extend it to 15 hours 3x per week. Were you not taught all this on your DCPC course? No offence, but you shouldn’t be driving vocationally if you don’t know the hours rules and regs. You’ll quickly find yourself with big fines to pay and in court facing licence revocation and potentially prison time if you become a habitual offender of the hours regs.

Nope, my initial CPC only covers EU driving rules.

Which is what we’re telling you about. You were asleep for the course/module then presumably?

It never said anything about 15 hours duty time.
