It’s always surprising how much distance travelled in latitude can often shorten the distance travelled in longitude the further places are from the poles in latitude. It’s a bit like the shortest distance from Los Angeles to London being via Northern Canada and Greenland.

As for running to Basel going that way instead of Luxembourg-Strasbourg-Kehl Bridge and A5 and Basel to Moscow via Latvia  :open_mouth: instead of Basel-Karlsruhe-Munich-Vienna-Bratislava-Lviv-Kiev the jury is still out although to be fair I’ve never driven further East than Ljubljana and Dubrovnik and that’s only with a car.

Oh with a car :unamused: , well I’ll make sure to ask your advice when I go to Moscow I mean Tesco, easily confused :unamused:

Have you informed Richard Branson’ just to make sure he isnt wasting fuel :unamused:

euromat:
not only would that route involve 2 extra borders its also longer km wise

Hang on is this the voice off experience, yes  . I’ll be sure to sort out his advice if I go to Tesco, I mean Moscow, I keep getting them confused  , easily done

I’m pretty sure that DAF doesn’t have wings on it,

Do you not think :open_mouth: , as the man himself states during his trip “the mighty 410”

Now now sir, you’re spending to much time on the net :open_mouth:

Good old Carryfast, now ‘advising’ one of the forums most experienced international, indeed transcontinental, drivers on routes! Amazeballs.
.

Just think of it as a public service, if he wasnt on here he’d be in an RDC waitng room :open_mouth:

They are in the middle of building a Tesco in Moscow.

I’m no expert on shortest transatlantic routes but I always thought that the reason aircraft flew that route was to spend as much time over land as possible should they fall from the sky.

Look at a globe the further north or south the shorter the distance round it.

Heathrow to LA up and over Iceland, Greenland, Baffin island, Hudson Bay then down.

OK serious anorak time just to put this away.

Through any two points on a sphere which are not directly opposite each other, there is a unique great circle. The two points separate the great circle into two arcs. The length of the shorter arc is the great-circle distance between the points.

I thought they flew that way to get into the jet stream. Nice strong tail wind = faster journey time and better mpg as it were.

P.S. Brilliant diary Mat.

The easiest way to look at it is that the distance in longitude around the earth gets shorter the nearer to the poles. That can then be used when making long distance journeys in longitude to shorten the distance by plotting a curve that doesn’t exceed a distance travelled in latitude than that saved in longitude.Which is why the run between Heathrow and LA for example doesn’t go via the poles but it does go a long way North from LA.It’s also why both my idea of a possible route for the run in question was further in distance than the one used in the topic and it’s also why even that route wouldn’t have been the shortest possible.

Cracking diary mate, I’m on my 6th nite in hospital wiv a broken tibia, blood clots on my lungs n a chest infection n that rite perked me up n kept me entertained… Thank you! Lol.
