A few truck stops that also served the public used to have signs saying TRUCK DRIVERS HAVE PRIORITY at the counter, not seen any for a while now!Lynn at the Raven still has and indeed hasn’t been shy in putting it into practice.
as i found out last year. stopped there 1 saturday night, got up mid morning on the sunday, as only had to run down to the o2 in london. it was packed in there, bikers etc, i stood in a big queue with all my shower gear etc, got called to the front more or less straight away, and was told truck drivers get priority. she said when you’ve freshened up, if you want breakfast, don’t queue, just see us and you will get sorted straight away.
bloody hell i thought, top service. service that makes me go there anytime i’m passing.
A lot of msa did a discount for drivers truck and coach…if you didnt wear a uniform just take a tacho or your logbook to the till and get a discount…most of the time if you can afford to eat in them its crap costs a small fortune.
I wrote a letter of complaint (more support for the grand set of girls who ran it, served good food cheerfully) to Granada (think it was still Granada at that time) when they shut the transport drivers cafe at Hilton Park…never got a bloody acknowledgment.
Nearly all the services had transport drivers cafes in previous years, if it was shut for some reason they’d quietly give you transport prices in the main restaurant…didn’t need a log book or tacho card to prove you were a lorry driver, just show the bloody caloused and split fingers from roping and sheeting, no other identification needed…
Wasnt it mainly Kennings and Blue Boar that had seperate cafes for lorry drivers?
Can remember them at Strensham,Aust,Anderton and Liecester forest.
Aust & Membury services eastbound used to have seperate cafes for HGV drivers. I used to use the Aust one quite often & it was good. I don’t know if Aust still has a seperate place but the eastbound Membury one was being converted to a Coffee drive through place last time I was in there, that a a couple of onths ago so it’s probably up and running now.
BB
Woodall, Trowell, Leicester Forest and Watford Gap all had lorry drivers cafes and Washington besides the others that have been mentioned
cheers Johnnie
Scratchwood to add to the list. That’s London Gateway to some.
Wasn’t Rothersthorpe Lorries only?
When Membury and Leicester Forest were run by Ross Foods they were good.
it must of all been a long time ago before i was born anyway
Tankerman:
The mushroom near Lancaster had a separate floor in the tower for lorry drivers at one time.
IIRC it was THE floor in the tower. Must have been the best lorry driver restaurant view in the UK.
Tankerman, you have PM on an unrelated matter.
