if its in his contract to give a weeks notice and he didnt then they got every right to keep his payIt doesn’t have to be in his contract, even if he has an actual paper contract.
It is the general rule that your notice period is the same as your pay period.
If a company demands a different notice period ( usually longer), then it you would have to be in your contract.

68 quid a day is [zb]ing scandalousFair play to those that are doing it rather than sitting on their arses, but come on, that sort of money was on the low side 20yrs ago FFS, it is taking the ■■■■
it’s not all about the money. im on roughly the same as the lads at mortimers, i turned down a job taking 650 a week home, only 3 weeks ago. money does not make a job worth doing, a good boss is hard to come by, good kit and being looked after well is more important to me then being nothing but a number, replaceable anytime.

Good luck to all the new crew in the Morimers wagons. Try and ignore the detractors and don’t take their comments to heart.
If this new operation has half the reputation of the original “Eat More Chips” then you are in the right place. My time working for John was memorable.

I agree with that.
The situation at Mortimers was more complicated than a simple “gone bust, start again scenario”. The transport operation was only one part of the company (dairyfarm, fruit & veg wholesale, transport) and no-one knows exactly which part caused the problem but the point is everything had to be financially restructured which is what has happened. Note that they have continued with the same name and have even retained the “Eat More Chips” logo.
Not a case of “Pheonixfromtheashestrans Ltd”
Perhaps instead we should praise them for continuing and keeping 16 drivers in employment.
Unfortunately there may have been a couple of casualties like the man with the big lump of wood but you must ask yourself about the mentality of that approach and maybe a more measured attitude may have got him his money and personally I wouldnt be threatening the Mortimers- that may be a mistake.

im working nights at the moment mon-fri and taking home roughly £330 a week , yes im well aware this is a shockingly poor wage for class 1 work but its a case of theres sod all else going in my area and it beats sitting on my arse claiming dole. if i lived near mortimers i would be very happy to earn £68 per day plus £28 night out money.Bazza b, don’t be put off by the ‘I wouldn’t get outa bed for less than £700 quid a week’ & the ‘I was earning more than that 100 years ago’ brigades, we must all do what is right for us. Not to put too fine a point on it but the haulage job is knackered in this country, partly due to the eastern promise of “we’ll do it cheaper than him” & other ‘imported hauliers’ setting up operations over here & working for less than a fully UK operator can hope to run.
Good luck in the job & don’t be put off by the detractors!!
Ross.
cheers mate , i also was earning more than i am now 10 years ago but its a case of doing what you gotta do to get the cash coming in,thanks again ,baz.
That lump of wood thing was NEVER going to happen was it? Even IF it did, he still wouldn’t have got paid.
The bloke with the big lump of wood, was that to make shoulder chips from?

Im Sorry
But im 63 years old and semi retired i was proud to be a lorrydriver and a Profesional
as well driving uk for 25 years and contenental for 16 years Continental work was bloody
hard work then (back in the eighties) we had to have proper hand cases for all the paperwork
we had to carry and !!! fill in.Nowdays the job is to easy no agro as such etc etc, but!!!
£68 per day ■■ we are in the year 2010 and yes i was earning that amount back then.
and i was on £17 nite out money, what happened to the rates ■■? ill tell you shall i ?
When we joined this common market was we, as a Country, entiltled to Transport
Subsidies ■■ No we wasnt, when Spain joined was they ■■ yes, they got absolute Millions
in Subsidies to buy all new Lorries and trailors,When they joined i saw empty wastelands
filled with hundreds of fridge trailors and units hence why overnight they were coming
over here with brand new equipment instead of there Tonka Toys they used to use.Just
before they joined i was a owner driver running london to almeria Southern Spain to london for £1850
when they all got there nice new toys (not costing them a Penny!!) they started to do
it for £1200 needless to say it was goodbye time to that job.Its the same now Poland,
Romania Bulgaria etc have all got nice brand new Tackle cos they joined th EU,Why
do you think that every 3rd lorry you see in this country is Polish ■■,you havent got to
be a Brain Surgeon to work this one out.Have you noticed you dont see many German,
Dutch,Swiss etc lorries in this country no more ■■ Reason ■■ Well ask yourself this what
is it we Import from Poland that needs these hundreds of there lorries everyday ? of
course Nothing, what they have done is nicked all the work from around Europe at cheap
rates, they pay there drivers peanuts (i know as i have 2 friends living in Poland as lorry
Drivers) they buy cheap Diesal as well.Thats why every third lorry on our Motorways is
Polish registered Try it yourself next time your on the road. And yes they are doing Return
Loads out of all the Docks to all parts of our country while they wait for a decent back load
out of England.I have a Friend who gives out loads in Tilbury Docks and he says every 4th
Vehicle is Foriegn Registered. This is Eddie Stobart all over again Remember what they done
to the small hauliers and owner drivers ? yep thats right they undercut rates big time.I know this
because i remember i was doing Tilbury to Manchester as a backload for £180,Stobart was doing
it for £140,they put a lot of my Friends against the wall back then.So there you are then after
all this yapping ive been doing ive gone a bit of course, what i will say to drivers who want to work
for these cut throat Hauliers is where is your pride ? think about what your job is and compare
it against other menial jobs like Teachers,Polititions, baggage handlers, etc etc etc would they
take a pay cut ??of course not,but you are suposed to be Profesional Drivers, who is an Ambasador
for your company with hundreds of rules to remember,£68 per day ■■? please dont do it,if your
good at your job (which you should be) then you should be paid the right money.
Ok i said my bit please forgive me if i went on a bit but its nice to get thing of your chest.
And i mean no Malice against any Foreign Drivers they are just doing there job, sorry about my
Spelling..
Hi John, I worked at Mortimers and I can tell you this, unless you have worked there or looked at your net pay from them in the bank, do not quote stuff that you clearly do not have a clue about. The wage is made up in several different areas, not just 68 pounds a day. I hope this clears things up.
rico gone down the tubes big style, massive fraud investagation, lots of trucks and trailers missing.
see my thread … rise and fall of the mighty rico.

you only got to look at that company from barry s.wales they are on twenty quid a night out eurpean.or uk no parking paid…200 quid basic.the willy betts of uk.■■?So what should they do, (the drivers) all leave and give Slobodan & his mates the Job, or strike for £700 basic & £30 a night out, skint the company which will close down, the work will go to LKW Walters (or someone like that) & a big white truck with Rico on the curtains (or similar) will be doing it with Slobodan at the wheel??
We’ve all got complaints & questions, has anyone got any answers??
Ross.
Saw Mortimers getting off the boat Santander sunday.
It amazes me when Spain has 25% unemployment and 3 lorries from MU pulled in each with non-spanish drivers. Are theyre unions doing anything about that? (assuming the co has a financial reason for employing ‘foreign’ drivers).Just a thought thats all, dont all gang up on me .

Completely of topic, but I saw one of those Griffin International trailers In Veurne today with a Steve Pooley unit…
OK lad’s… As you were…
I see CM has published another article on the creditor owing haulier, seems the poor devils were possibly mis sold an interest rate rise protection product. We are subject to a picture too with papa creditor looking like Burl Ives from the film The Big Country, relatives within CM?
My thoughts would be, if they had run the business better they wouldn’t need to owe other people money and try to blame/claim from other businesses for mis management/ ineptitude problems. If they were any sort of gentlemen they could settle their debts from their asset base.
puntabrava:
If they were any sort of gentlemen they could settle their debts from their asset base.
But they are not. Cash is king and they dont , like any of haulier who subcontracts their work, give one stuff if the subbie or employee gets paid or not if they go pop.
They have hold of your 8 weeks money that you have very kindly given them by allowing 8 weeks credit,
This still goes on and they get what they deserve by allowing this to happen.
The Banks dont do it so why should you?
