im working nights at the moment mon-fri and taking home roughly £330 a week , yes im well aware this is a shockingly poor wage for class 1 work but its a case of theres sod all else going in my area and it beats sitting on my arse claiming dole. if i lived near mortimers i would be very happy to earn £68 per day plus £28 night out money.
Bazza b, don’t be put off by the ‘I wouldn’t get outa bed for less than £700 quid a week’ & the ‘I was earning more than that 100 years ago’ brigades, we must all do what is right for us. Not to put too fine a point on it but the haulage job is knackered in this country, partly due to the eastern promise of “we’ll do it cheaper than him” & other ‘imported hauliers’ setting up operations over here & working for less than a fully UK operator can hope to run.
Good luck in the job & don’t be put off by the detractors!!
With regards to working for peanuts, I have been driving for over 39 years both in this country but for the last 16 years doing Europe.
Got fed up working for British firms and found myself working for a French company the pay and working conditions are far better no 13 or 15 hour working days.
Also the pension you receive is also 3 times better than the English OAP all i can say is if any young drivers want a better future try and get employed by a French company paying French tax and insurance.
After 30 years driving for them you are entitled to retire, some of my colleagues have retired at 53 years on full pension, at the present time i am unable to work due to a severe illness i thank myself lucky i am employed in France because the sick pay is also much better.
Hopefully looking to start back at work sometime after September and can`t wait.
you only got to look at that company from barry s.wales they are on twenty quid a night out eurpean.or uk no parking paid…200 quid basic.the willy betts of uk.■■?

So what should they do, (the drivers) all leave and give Slobodan & his mates the Job, or strike for £700 basic & £30 a night out, skint the company which will close down, the work will go to LKW Walters (or someone like that) & a big white truck with Rico on the curtains (or similar) will be doing it with Slobodan at the wheel??
We’ve all got complaints & questions, has anyone got any answers??

Rico went under about 4 years ago, open your eyes and have a look around before you say something.

can i just say I went back yes for £68 a day so did 13 of his old drivers the work is clean & easy he pays £28 a night out and parking in uk and euroland it would be nice to earn £30 a day more i know, the trucks all have fridges so self catering keeps my cost down a bit, but having been in a couple of jobs local to me the jobs a doddle and it stops my misses finding me jobs to do around the garden every day after work a bonus
each to his own
Good for you fella and good luck to your mates too.
I’ve been listening to folk winge on about how ‘good things were twenty years ago…’ since I started work in 1986.
Thing is, I don’t feel like boring my younger colleagues about the good old days because they weren’t, they were crap.
Personally, my pay and conditions have improved over the years. I would be very wary about taking advice off someone who tells you their lot hasn’t improved after a lifetimes employment.
Am I the only one who wonders when they read or hear about some ‘mega’ job from days gone by, if was that good, why did you leave?

I know they went skint & I don’t think it was that long ago but I saw one on the A59 yesterday morning, white MAN with white curtainsider with RICO in orange on the curtains!!
So until you can see through my eyes why don’t you take your own advice.

Anyway, what bleedin difference would it make if Rico went skint or not, I used the term as a generic (you can look that up) the point is still the same, the easteners are happy to work over here for less than our hauliers can.
So if your so quick to criticise me, what’s your answer? Hold out & not get outa bed for less than £140 a day & £30 a night out??

I agree bigr250, you’ve hit the nail right on the head.
Heard all these big wages before,I’ve been an owner driver, and I’ve employed lads,I’ve also worked as an employed driver. If it is so easy to pay these so called “big wages” why aren’t there more owner drivers and small to medium hauliers, and why if it’s so easy are there so many lads out of work? I won’t condemn anyone for working for a so called “low wage”,it’s bad out there and any work is better than no work, good luck to 'em because there aren’t that many men earning a lot more than what Mortimers are paying, and I think if the truth be known some earning a lot less.
I would love to know about these good old days…yes continental work was different with all the regular companies and their true characters, but I’ve only been doing this for 28 years and I’m quite happy to turn on my bicooler when I’m too hot and grab a cold one out of my fridge,as I’m happy to turn on my night heater and eat something warm out of my microwave when I’m cold, stand up to put on my pants and drive up hills fully loaded without spewing out smoke, overheating and causing traffic jams and flick on my retarder when I’m dropping down Pamplona or Mont Blanc rather than burning brakes.
True in years gone by perhaps the money was in the job but we’ve got to face facts those times have gone along with a lot of them old companies and their characters never to be replaced.

I was just pointing out about Rico, thats all.
But speaking about Mortimers, I think the salary is good for the current economical climate, if you can manage to take home 450-500 a week.
I started reading this because I used to work on Mortimers & so did my dad. I left in 2000 after I got stitched up working the Milenium new years eve aftter being promised “Big Money” which which did’nt happen. Anyway moving on I just thought I’d have a nose as I saw the post.
It amazes me how drivers in this country can’t wait to belittle the next guy or take the p$$ out of his comments. What happened to a big family of drivers that all help each other out & watch out for each other?
I’m almost 43 now but I do remember the old days although through a kids eyes. That being said I did grow up with diesel in my veins. Learning & seeing it all going on so I have seen how the job has changed. I have qued up the steps in Dover on the way out & sat in the wheel house waiting for my reg to show on the screen on the way back in etc etc & I think 93 was the start of it all going a bit pair shaped, but as much as we could all winge about it. Either move with the times or get out I guess.
Yes it was better.
The thing that really winds me up is the way everybody is so quick to stab another in the back. I noticed a thread on here tonight of a guy asking for urgent help about a fine he was given in Spain. Some gave him advise & some took the p$$! Well done I’m sure that really made his day. He was asking for help!!!
I was broke down in Spain once on the N1 Solstor trailer for all to see & one of Buzby’s from southampton drove straight past me… To$$er! I was there for 34 hours. Ran out of quite a bit of food etc I’ve stopped for drivers loads of times. I still do because its the decent thing to do. Anyway if Toby is getting the company back on its feet & offering jobs it’s upto the individual to work out his finances & see if its worth him doing. He would take into account that he probably would be in a decent rig so happy with that side of it & work out if the job is ok & make his decission. Yes we all know the money isn’t there so much these days. We have to accept that or do something else.
My dad & good family friends all told me I just caught the tail end of it being a good job. I started on Solstor at the start of 92 three days after passing my test. Straight in at the deep end. Had some great times with some awesome blokes ( not in a gay way) well not much haha.
It was actually one of the best times in my working life so far. Sadly though a few guys are no longer with us. My dad & others are retired now & wondering how they had time to work at all ha.
I wasn’t too keen on the job at Mortimers at the time. It was a bit too much like being a multi drop driver. 1 pallet here a few there. The worst run was London!!! omg I hated that.
Anyway enough horse s#1t from me. Please try & get on girls will you. ■■■ BIG HUGS ■■■ & a crafty reach around…
My personal view is I don’t like companies closing one day and starting up again the next. How many other people lose out when a company goes to the wall. Ive always been a 1 truck operator and have been ripped off more times than I care to remember which is why I don’t work for UK firms anymore. It amazes me that a firm can go into liquidation yet still have enough money to buy back the fleet and start again with just a slightly different name.
That said, its good for the drivers that are getting their jobs back I spose. As for working for low wages it can’t get worse than what I earn right now
there is a driver on a Nedexco thread saying something similar wheel nut. i quote…
‘then got a letter this morning saying because i didnt give a week notice they aint paying me. there getting a visit monday with a large peice of wood to change there attitude’

if its in his contract to give a weeks notice and he didnt then they got every right to keep his pay

It doesn’t have to be in his contract, even if he has an actual paper contract.
It is the general rule that your notice period is the same as your pay period.
If a company demands a different notice period ( usually longer), then it you would have to be in your contract.
