Missing the pin?

Today, checked the height of a skelly that I was picking up, and I noticed that someone had dropped it a bit too high, so raised the ride height of my unit and attempted to back under…

BANG!!!

HISSSSSS!!!

Misjudged the pin height and instead managed to shear one of the rear air tanks off (the unit lost all its air as a result) as well as smashing both light clusters and the crossmember between the landing legs.

Since then, I’m now trying the raising the ride height to get the legs slightly off the ground method in order to prevent a similar mishap.

Still feel like a pollock after what happened today.

You did that this morning and they just gave you another unit and sent you back out?

Always get out and check height even when dropping the air out the unit. I see plenty of drivers just going straight under but if its too high or too low BANG. I learnt the same way you have [emoji23]

Not missed a pin… yet… I know it’ll happen one day. It’s just when it’ll happen. And more than importantly where. And in front of who…

Our fleet is varied, deep pins, shallow pins, and trailers where the 5th wheel is bigger than the bed plate. And rear steer trailers.

I have had one near miss but I knew it was gonna happen

Went to collect a trailer that had been on summer storage, it had been dumped in a field at a angle, no matter what I did I couldn’t get the bed plate to sit on the 5th wheel flat. And it wouldn’t engage the pin either.
Eventually I managed to get the 5th wheel to engage. So moved it on level ground pulled the pin and went for it again. It went much with a much more positive click.

If you’re not sure GOAL (get out and look) will save a lot of hassle. A few weeks ago I had to go under a deep pin fridge at a 90 degree angle. Massive scope for disaster there. All it meant was that I was in and out of the cab like a yo yo checking every few inches. Cost me a fair bit of time, but far less than the time lost filling forms in if it went wrong.

If you’re paid by the hour - then TAKE your time! - You’re getting paid “extra” for doing so, after all.

Why this “salaried job & knock” thing, where everything is “rush rush rush”, FAR more likely to end up coming to grief - before getting around to leaving the yard, even! :open_mouth:

Tlbury Docks. springs to mind.

Has it got any better of late?

Driver’s Graveyard, that place. :frowning:
