Hi Gidders.
Not many,I were lucky as was on steel haulage out of Sheffield for two years plus a bit of market work, then ten years on tankers then twenty seven years on ambient trailers and fridges so never had to sheet many high loads.I have never used a curtainsider in all my driving career.
I do remember being on holiday int 80s and when I got back to work there was a trailer int yard loaded with scrap pallets for our firm’s bonfire night and I were asked to rope it up as I was only one who could do it.I think the highest load I had was a load of reels out of Reeds Sittingbourne for Heinz Wigan 1968.
How ever them lads from Barnsley etc put up with double sheeting those double stacked pallets of bottles plus corner boards,I don’t know.
When I was at Prestons in the late 70’s we did have a couple of curtainsiders, I remember using one that didn’t have rear doors, I also recall some of the lads, (me included) didn’t like using them, the reason being you still had to rope the load, a sheeted load was a lot easier to rope, the curtains didn’t fit very well over the ropes on the side rails and the buckles were crap. I prefered to carry steel, usually 4 warwicks and chains and off we go. I went back to Prestons for some part time work in 2011, here’s some photos from then.
