When NASA sent the first rocket to the moon they were about 3/4 of the way there when they met a Willi Betz Merc coming back the other way… Not far behind that were a couple of Dutch drawbars…and an Iranian in an old Mack…
Jeff…
And there were several trucks from, XXXXXXXXXX, (Name any one of the dodgy firms you knew, and there were plenty to choose from!) who were refused entry because they had no permits! (Sound familiar?)
But there was always an enterprising driver to whom having no permits was the least of his problems.

Bill Kitt’s F12 subbing for F.G.Hammond Intl. loaded with exhibition equipment for the Tehran International Trade Fair.
A proper lorry. Looks great. Keep them coming lads, a great thread.

And the regular driver was Alex Peat.

I think they had more than one - and right-hookers too! Robert
At last a photo of my old company Trans Mondo, the trucks are a bit newer, we used to have series 1 FH and 143’s

Wasn’t Death Valley on the old Bolu to Ankara road, now bypassed by a motorway? Robert
It certainly was Robert, although I am sure that there are a number of Death Valleys which drivers refer to but this one was at Bolu not the one on the M62.

I wonder if that ROMAN diesel struggling up the other way is pulling a fridge load of horsemeat from Bucharest to the pie factory in Ankara…
…with the driver singing that catchy little Turkish folksong, 'Down Yonder Death Valley (where streamlets meander - or should that be ‘TIR-tilts’ meander). Robert
PS
Down yonder Death Valley, where TIR-tilts meander,
When drum-brakes were fading I pensively drove
For at the bright noontide in solitude wander,
Amid the dark shades of the Ankara grove;
‘T was there, while the vultures were eerily singing,
I first met that big one, the dread of my heart!
Around us for gladness the cowbells were ringing,
The hares on Erdikkidido; alas an old ■■■■!

I don’t think so Robert as that photo was taken as we were heading towards Ankara and I.I.R.C. the drop over the side of the mountain was on the right before you hit the T.I.R. checkpoint near what we called The Bulgarian Camp or The Bogey camp.
Who knows what the F. Troop fridge was carrying, rumour had it for many years that a Romanian fridge was transiting West Germany on a Sunday during the driving ban with the fridge running. When he was stopped and checked by the B.A.G. they discovered that he was carrying a load of tyres.
There were several death valleys including the one leading down to Erzincan which could be lethal in the snow and ice.
