From the W.J Riding site, where they go when they fall off:
Just seen this “vehicle prohibited as containers not secure”

Looks like all the pallets strapped but not each drum individually, seems harsh ■■ Or not ■■

If ever…
There was a load made for a fly sheet, that’s the one.( well, fertilizer too)
I did drums on pallets and on the bed using a fly sheet and cross roping every four barrels, I reckon I’d be parked up for running like that nowadays.
How was he supposed to secure them?
You can’t use a barrel hitch on the outside because of the pallet it’s on . I’d use a barrel hitch however through the middle as said on both sides along with at least 1 preferably 2 straps as you have at the moment.
Just do what most drivers would do, and use a couple of internals.
Am I the only one thinking just one more ■■■■■■■■ the rear drums and he would have got away with it.
If your gonna run out of straps best do it at the front and hope Vosa don’t open the curtains all the way. Course if they are aware of this fudge and open all the way your forked.
A load of rope with my patented and complex ‘■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■, dolly hitch combination’ could have saved the day.
just another total ott crucifixion from some bean counting vosa dobber…it dont matter what you would do with that load, you couldnt strap it unless it was on a wagon and drag…put the load on the wagon, and carry the 8,798 straps you would need to secure it ffs!!..doomed if he does and doomed if he dont…poor driver.
Straps and steel generally do not mix
Coil longways in a well = 2 chains with a chain on each side through middle of coil so that the coil cannot go in any direction

You can’t chain steel if the customer wont allow it. In the last 15 years I’ve only used chains a handful of times. At the risk of tempting fate, I ain’t lost a load yet.

The usual advice DVSA trot out is to put empty pallets on top, then strap.

The customer isn’t responsible for the security of the load the driver is.
I’ll point out that the TATA document above relates to the Dutch operation in Ijmuiden. It mentions briefly that they are working on a Europe wide standard, but wether they have done so yet I don’t know.
