Mercedes Axor

We have axors on supermarket work and they are an great truck doing what they were designed for ie local distribition.they take double shifts and two drivers a day really well.they are well put together(the 63 plate iveco rigids are dropping to bits).we have uprated actros seats AC and .night heaters and the bunks ok for a kip.i for one wouldnt want to do a month away tramping europe in one but its the same old thing tight fisted bosses buying the wrong trucks for the job.i can see they are not ideal at 6’4" and most of us have stuck our boots thru the speaker grills.the worst thing with a low roof axor on nights is the ■■■■ poor interior lights they are a lot better on the high roof version.once again if put on the work for which they were designed the do the job fine .we find the auto boxes ok but then we only do highway work nothing to demanding

Does anyone else with a 430 find that they pull better fully loaded and are gutless when empty/ solo? Or is mine just confused?
It’s not a truck I would write home about but it does the job
( as for the mattress I bought a 2’6" memory foam topper off eBay for about £30. Bunk is much better with that)

I would like to refer you to the laws of physics oddzpop.

It is impossible for an engine to pull better when it has more weight, unless its ECU is linked to the suspension and power is restricted at lower weights.

On a cheap and cheerful Axor, I don’t think so…

It may be that you drive on the torque more when heavy, this could give the impression that it pulls better, but it most certainly will not be going any faster.

Tesco spec 63 plate units at work;

Pros:

Bigger fuel tanks compared to the G Cabs, handy hand operated exhaust brake holds well when needed. Erm can’t think of anything else.

Cons:

Cramped cab, lost count of the amount of times I’ve head butted the tacho, or crushed my fingers when the arm rest gave way or got an ache in my left knee as there’s no room to move. The interior lights are crap, working nights I have to get my torch out if I need to find something in my bag, the feel of the plastics is cheap with sharp edges, if I get myself in an ide driving position the steering wheel blocks the dashboard meaning I have to drive in an awkward position. Brakes are crap, uncomfortable ride quality.

Juddian:
Good simple working lorry, but spoiled, as are most lorries, if specced with satans auto gearbox.

Most tractable engine in 430 guise i’ve driven for years, lug right down happily to 800 rpm and pull away easily.

No use for glory boys, other glory boys not impressed.

The auto box is poor, nobody I know smokes them in auto, if you don’t like them then thats ok with me and just about everyone else.

If you want to drive around in something festooned with lights and frilly curtains and get paid minimum wage hey! thats ok too.

what I’m trying to say is, the axor does the job for the target market.

I get paid more to drive this axor than my V8 580 scania fh16 globey the rare 1857 actros at birds groupage or XF105 ssc.
I try to spend as long as i can esp once the OT rates kick in after 8*5 hrs

NOVE:
We had one on hire last week. We also had an Iveco, and that was brand new. Less than 100km on the clock when they dropped it off. Merc had 89k on the clock.

In best place, Merc

2nd Place. My Daf LF, has 250,000kms on it, and wasn’t mine from new.

Very firm last, Iveco. What a bag of spanners.

I was out in a Stralis yesterday while my Renault was off the road getting tyres done, and I must say that I had forgotten how good a truck the IVECO actually is. Wouldn’t mind driving one full time again.

Tarrman:

Axors have brakes…■■?:shock::shock:

I think some of the reason for the poor interior lighting is that once the original bulb fails companies replace it with one of less than 1/3 of the wattage. The bulb looks the same so it must be OK. Every little helps.

Heap of ■■■■■■■ ■■■■■ had one on demo was comfortable as a day cab doing local stuff but the one night out I had in it - well all I can say is I hope the new euro vi version comes with standard self destruct button that kicks in automatically if driver doesn’t press it by the end of the 2nd week

Mate of mine runs a “hacksaw” pulls his low loader(not on STGO just regular plant work) he reckons it’s a down to earth basic motor that can do any thing he asks of it,I’ve driven it my only complaint is the bum numbing rock hard drivers seat, but as Juddian posted not one for the glory boys, like my Hino after all a lorry is a tool to go to work with not a fashion statement

I’ve spent the past nine months tramping, yes, really :open_mouth: , in a '13 plate 26 ton Axor.

Other than a lack of internal storage, which I’ve overcome by making a set of overhead cupboards that fit where the upper bunk normally resides, I haven’t any problems with it. I can, and regularly do a ten hour drive with no issues, it’s a very comfortable ride, the brakes are very positive, the bunk is the most comfortable I’ve slept on, I’ve yet to bang my knee on the parking brake handle :unamused: , and amazingly, I haven’t put my boot through the speaker :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: .

When I read some of the posts in this thread, I am eternally grateful to my dear old Mum and Dad for not bringing me up to be a prima Donna

That’s because the majority of rigid cabs are crap whereas you basically have an artic cab on a rigid chassis so it will feel comparatively luxurious. Drive a range of different artics full time and then come back and tell us how good it is. What model is yours anyway? 2528 or 2535/6? If it’s one of the latter then it will be pretty nippy on a 26t platform.

threewheelsonmywagon:

Are you sure it’s an Axor? I’ve driven one for three years and yet to find adequate braking.

Only problem I have with @r5esore is the seat, the brakes are there once you get used to them  . Oh and the electrics are ■■■■■■ always replacing bulbs, for a while they had a tendency to lose their gears which can be a bit unnerving going downhill towards 3 lanes of static traffic :open_mouth:

That’s the best name ever for this Axor crap @r5esore, PMSL brill man

Can I just point out that a rigid is always going to be more comfortable than an artic no matter what form they come in.
