been told by a few folk that as i am a mechanic and carrying out a road test after repair that this is perfactly legal…
this true or not?

I think there is a bit of confusion here, you are exempt from the tacho regs under those circumstances but you still need the licence for the category of vehicle.

There’s an exemption that allows a driver to drive a category D vehicle on a category C licence in the scenario described which may be rule they’re thinking of.
