HI Martin
I used to go away as a kid with martintrux they’re yard was next to where i lived. I think i remember your’e dad he had grey hair and smoked cigars.and had a 141 scania in black with red wings and possibly an air con unit on the roof. I think the driver in question with the broken arm was Joe Lee and i remember they sent my dads friend out to italy to pick up joe and the lorry it was a bit of a mess but they drove it back to the yard any way.
best wishes
Andy
boyzee:
Any of you remember Tommy Peak and his dad who were owner drivers pulling for martintrux in the 70,s.Young Tommy had a new 110 sleeper in martintrux colours,i used to meet him clearing at the clink in south london. He did a lot of swiss an spent a lot of time in the wartec bar in bale. When he finished pulling for martintrux he bought a 141 in red,a left ■■■■■■ and pulled for eissel shipping in east india dock doing spain with a tanker.I saw Tommy a few weeks ago an sadly he looks like he is on bad times. His dad passed away some years ago.I also knew cannonball who drove a km bedford for martintrux he used to clear in baxter hoare,s in erith.
I remember Tom & his dad & his best mate Chris . When the Les Routiers started a branch in UK the old man joined for a coupla bob. He was on his way to Spain when the flic stopped him near Bordeaux for defective tyres on his unit . He called Les Routiers who paid for 6 new tyres on the understanding that he pay them back from UK. Never seen again. Shortly afterwards Les Routiers stopped all their UK connections. I liked Tommy ,we took the p out of each other for years- Tom could take it as well as give it ! Is he still around? & what happened to Chris?

Ozzie Hugh, No. no responses yet only yours, After 1973 they expanded quickly when they moved to Chadwell St Mary Tilbury.
At one time they were Townsend Thorensens Ferries biggest customer. Some of the alledged stories are they were shut down by ministry of Transport over Ghost drivers doing shunt work in Italy …Shut down over smuggling by drivers by H M customs, and then by lack of opperating capital due to too many people using MTX 's Ferry account and not paying their debts. And yes I do believe Reg Hilliard and son Nigel did pull the purse strings along with daughter Jane, all three very rarely ventured out of the office, the only ones who knew the drivers by name was Bill and his wife Vicky,
But still no definitive answer as to how or why it folded. It seemed at the time very stable and would go on forever, but since that time many of the “old” time originals of European haulage have disappeared, also the customers they served.
So Hugh I am still waiting for drivers or others who MAY know the story of their demise to come forward with their theories.
Regards Tony

Hi ya I was told this several years ago .basically their demise came about because as you know they had a good relationship with Townsend thorensen and operated a third party booking service , this generally ran at 6 figure sum . When P&O took over Townsend , they wanted it settling they paid off some of it and in the end decided enough was enough . They also blamed the free for all allocation of permits to the increasing number of new Eastern European hauliers .we all now know how it’s all ended up most British international hauliers followed in the coming years .
