Marks and Spencer to buy GIST

There’s a GIST rdc in Hemel Hemstead.

They don’t pay competitive agency pay rates. The pay would need to go up by at least £4/hour (including holiday pay) to be competitive. GIST probably also deducts breaks from pay, which is becoming less common as many clients/agencies have stopped deducting breaks when calculating agency pay.

GIST is one of the few companies that still employ LTD agency drivers, even though they are clearly disguised employees. Wait till HMRC catch up with them and give them a multiple million pound back dated tax bill, for unpaid income tax, employee’s NI, and employer’s NI. GIST (or the agency that they use) will also be short changing these LTD agency drivers by not paying into their pension funds.

GIST lorries are up to 6 years old. Many of the competitors in the area don’t run lorries more than 3 years old.

Trying to run this depot on the cheap probably means that they are often short of drivers, which would have a knock on effect on the service that they provide.

Gist do deduct half an hour a day for breaks.

Trucks are 5 years old when they get taken off the fleet the same as most companies do, 5 years is fairly normal for a leased vehicle. I don’t know of many that only lease them for 3 years.

Rates are not the most competitive as you say but the work is generally a doddle, and you are usually left to your own devices as well.

They don’t micro manage as much as others do either.

And yes they do still allow LTD companies according to a driver at our place who was a limited driver, said that’s why he was at our place as most wokt entertain LTD anymore.

Double post

It will be Pertemps who will have a problem if they are still using drivers registered as LTD companies. Pertemps are the in house agency and have their own office at the larger depots.

During my years on agency Gist at Hemel were one of the people I worked for most, even ended up working for Pertemps in the end and of all the large number of operators and retailers I drove for on agency, pretty much all the big ones Gist/M&S were probably my favourite. Back in the days of the frankly bonkers Polarstream fridges to put an era to it. Surprised it’s taken M&S til now to be honest.

I’m confused, don’t all the supermarkets and retailers use 3rd party companies for their transport operations and supply chains so they can concentrate on their side of the business which is retaíl

No not at all, in fact more & more seem to be bringing it in house

And the Daddy of them all, Tesco, has always kept it mostly in house other than the odd third party depot, and that says quite a lot.

Yea, I did a few weeks there.
Out of all the supermarkets I worked for. Argos, Co-op, Tesco and M&S. I’d say M&S have some of the worst store bays.
Co-op a close 2nd.

That’s why I loved it, I was young then and loved a challenge. I loved doing Central London for M&S & Tesco. Covent Garden in the 7.5t Gist lorry. Used to have a regular start at early hours at Tesco Harlow, a run up to the furthest Norfolk store. A central London store started at same time and I’d often come in to a Tesco driver ■■■■■■■■ and moaning at the agency, me, getting the ‘cream’ and him getting shafted, despite both being regular. Their faces when I suggested we swap  They’d forever buy me coffee after that every time they saw me! Like I say, I was young, not sure I’d be so up for Central London now

I’m still ok with London but with some exceptions.
With Tesco Purfleet or Dagenham na.
You start like 5-10 miles from London and your straight on the A13, straight into hell.
But if your like an 1 hour or 2 hour drive from London its not so bad.

We changed to 3 years as we found on a 5 year lease MANs disintegrated on year 3 and started getting expensive with “out of contract repairs” - the Iveco’s we have now are on 3 years and are probably less robust but R+M covers 90% of the issues, the Stralis’s disintegrated themselves start of year 2… S-Ways after 6 months lol .
