Hi Gingerfold[Graham], We used to have some of those lift tanks at M/C Mill, also they adapted a standard rigid rd tank, i:e took the tank off and put one of those things on it, Jimmy Hughes used to drive it said it was a n/mare top heavy, but eh" thats management for you Regards CJA1.

CJA1 - this the eight legger your talking about, not sure if its Jimmy with his back to the camera

No safety gantry raised, no safety harness worn, no ppe, no elf and safety. :open_mouth:

If those old pratices were carried out to-day, The H&S would be horrified to say the least, But the job got done with very little problems, IMO Drivers in those days didnt need some one to tell him how the job was done they just got on with it & used their common sence, & did their job very well, Regards Larry.PS (Appart from a few nuggets that thought they were drivers).

There are still plenty of nuggets about today Larry.

And unfortunately it’s the nuggets that cause all of the legislation!

22 years ago there were not that many tanks that had handrails unless it was a customer specific request. looking back it must have been around that time that companies started to specify two sided rails on new road tanks though. Also, as its a lift tank, mounting handrails would have been tight to say the least. That said, the “Management” never fell of a tank as far as I can remember !

As a note (and I’ll stand correcting) Its still not a requirment to fit handrails to Lift or ISO tanks

quote=CJA1] Hi Sniffy. I think your prob right. but eh" been out for a bit LOL!! Cheers Chris.

I’m sure that Peter Davies won’t mind me using this brilliant photo to illustrate this 1950s AEC Mammoth Major Mk.III tanker with rudimentary safety gantry. Taken at CWS Sun Flour Mills Trafford Wharf, Manchester, in the 1960s.

In the early 1970s it became more cost effective to ship containers of flour over to Northern Ireland. One such container seen leaving Beaufort Road Mill, Birkenhead. and second picture shows one being handled in Belfast.

Cracking N.I.T. photos, thank you! There were some more taken of a Spillers tank, perhaps at Preston Dock, in the early 70s, and featuring an early Borderer. You don’t have copies of those, perchance?
