M6 down or A50 and across?

You wouldn’t have wanted to be on it today south/east bound. Rigid shed his load of fruit over the road. I’d have took a picture but it occurred to me that it’s illegal.

I was chatting to a driver one night in Rugby truckstops and his story on this very subject made me laugh so thought I’d share it.
The driver told me he’d been running 9days non stop and was heading homeward from Europe via Liverpool, he got a phone call telling him to avoid the M6 as wheel tappers were out at Stafford, he asked the caller what route was recommended and was told M1/A50 then back to M6 at J16.
He therefore took this route and shortly after joining the M6 got a call from his boss to see how he was getting on!
“Just at gate 17” was the drivers answer, to which his boss then said “wow, you’re cracking on well!” So the guy I was talking to told his boss the route he’d taken ans his boss asked him if it had saved him much time! And the answer which made me chuckle was
“About 24hours!”

Sorry I know it’s not right what he did but the quick witted answer tickled me!

When I worked for the French we used to do a lot of trailers into Michelin at Stoke and on a Friday we would often be asked to load out of Sheffield or Doncaster. I always used to use the A50, A38 and up the M1 or M18. One day I got a call and asked where I was. I replied “just past Derby” and got a tirade of abuse, apparently the only way to go was up the M6, Manchester Leeds and down to either Sheffield or Donny. I told them that if they wanted me to load I was doing OK. If I had gone there way I would probably still be queueing on the M62 :stuck_out_tongue:

Even going over the top, you could not guarantee what time you would get to the loading point, but the A50 is generally free running

My 00.00 shift last Saturday was from Stoke to Stanstead.
I asked in the traffic office what delays there were to be told the usual M6 closed J7 to 6,and the A14 closed J2 to 3.
I thought I’d go via the A50,halfway along found there were roadworks with a long detour on the old road.Didn’t realise how many new roundabouts had been built on the old road!
Hit the M1 and of course got the warning about the A14.
I thought ,well I’ll go down to J15 where it says you can get back onto the A14 eastbound, but on checking my map,I thought it means going back too far north,so I stuck to the M1,intending to go right down to the M25,then back up the M11.
■■■■ me! If there wasn’t road works with only one lane open past Toddington and a two mile queue!
Anyway,I was committed now,got into Stanstead and checked my time, did it in less than 4 hours anyway so can’t complain.(Mind you, those new Actros don’t waste much time).
Came back via the A 14 to see that the lane 1 on both sides had been relaid between J 2 and 3 during the night.
That’s the trouble with only working on Friday night and Sunday night, any road works and they’re bound to be on my run!
