M20 Bridge Collapse

Ooh, a twist to the story…

The plant waggon was ‘dropping off’ equipment - he is on the hard shoulder, maybe looking where / how to get to the site, as they are working on the bridge…

But was it the reefer that clipped the bridge…?

This adds more ammunition in the gun for anti lorry Nimbies bleating the same old line of " Get the freight on the railways " by yoghurt making and woolly jumper wearers who know nothing about road haulage .
There was a fatal accident many years ago, where a boom or bucket on a digger or Jcb swang out writing off cars and decapitated the occupants , think it was in Cornwall or Devon ?

The XF’s super space cab is knackered, so the bridge has obviously fallen on the cab whilst going under it at speed, so I don’t understand the relevance of that trucks involvement.

Looking at thet picture from above, it does look as if it was the artic trailer that hit the bridge and not something on the low loader. I too wonder if, for some reason, his suspension was raised. From the look of it, that plant truck was parked when the bridge came down

Never mind the fridge wagons’ height, if the digger had faced the other way with the bucket attached in the right direction, the arm would’ve been a bit lower. You can’t get the boom as low if it’s facing the blade.

The other thread on this has better aerial photo’s.

Just been confirmed on Sky News that the bridge was hit by the digger.

And they are always right :unamused:

Has any thought of the fact the chiller trailer had come from maidstone services and had raised his suppension fully up instead of travel position ?

You cant be serious

Its not even a double decker how high do you think the bloody air suspension can go■■? :unamused:

M20 bridge collapse update - officers leave scene

27 AUG 2016
Kent Police officers have now left the scene of a major incident on the M20 after a pedestrian bridge over the motorway collapsed.

Both sides of the carriageway are likely to remain closed overnight while emergency work is carried out at the scene.

A digger being transported on the back of a heavy goods vehicle collided with the bridge on the London-bound carriageway between Junctions 4 and 3 shortly after 12.05pm on Saturday 27 August 2016.
Injuries

Part of the bridge fell onto a second lorry, the driver of which was treated for shock at the scene.

A motorcyclist who fell from his bike at the time of the incident was also taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Local roads including the A20 are currently very congested and motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes if possible.

Kent Police continues to support Highways England in ensuring the motorway is reopened as quickly as possible with the safety of all road-users in mind.

Digger driver will now be offered tea and biscuits with Beverly or Sarah Bell , see the thread titled Bev on You Tube in her Chelsea tractor.
It is a miracle that nobody was killed, think of the children .

I look forward to the full written Trucknet report

I look forward to the full written Trucknet report

It’ll arrive faster and probably cost less than the “official report”, although we’ll need to get Carryfast promoted to Sir or similar as that seems a requirement for all public enquiry chairpersons and we know he’ll be after the job…no one else can type for long enough to complete a good looking report.

Just done a lookup and cross checked the truck images, and it appears the company involved (Auto Renovations) has a rather apt job - commercial recovery. It also appears their web site has gone into meltdown so I won’t bother linking to it. Wonder if they’ll send one of their own to pick this one up. Does look like the trailer was a normal height, not the usual low-loader so can imagine it being simply too high to get under that low bit.

What a mess think that must be one worst ■■■■ ups I’ve ever seen in a truck.
There is strikes and then there is this.

Bet the guy in the Arctic must ■■■■ himself when that come down on his cab

You can see with aierel pic on other thread it was hit with digger

If that digger has knocked the bridge down,he must have been crawling along

That’s the scenario that weeto seems to be going by.IE knew it was tight so went for the hard shoulder to crawl under it. :open_mouth:

He won’t be the first to try something like that to see if the vehicle will fit under an overhead obstruction, some go slow on the approach some don’t and pay the price, the Internet is full of pictures of “professional” truck drivers who have hit bridges marked or unmarked, it’s nothing to be shocked about, you just need to open your eyes.

A footbridge was brought down on the M62 just west of J20 in the late 70’s early 80’s, the company was Queghan’s Plant Hire from Oldham. The driver & Co; were both prosecuted because he was overheight, he had just come on the M62 WB and it was the first bridge he came too!!

Regards
Dave Penn;

Maybe the dumper hit it and got pushed back into the digger.

The disused railway bridge at Broadway was hit by an excavator on a low loader a few years ago; The driver had already delivered the machine to a job and once off hired he picked it up, hitting the bridge.
The reason he hit the bridge on the second run and not on the first was because a different bucket was on the machine- I think it went out without a bucket attached, returned with one which was just enough to hit the bridge.
Aforementioned bridge will be carrying steam trains in the next year or so as Glos Warks Railway is extending to Broadway.
Re the M20 crash, I hope someone draws attention to the terms and conditions of hiring plant; “Damage caused is chargeable to the hirer.” Surprised Flannerys’ weren’t moving it themselves.
