Correct and proper driving is needed…lane discipline especially. There is no reason whatsoever that I should overtake a car on a motorway going uphill fully loaded…but I do it often
The person I have overtaken may have been driving for 10/20 or 30 years and thinks they are driving perfect. How can/do you educate someone like that? We all drive for a living and see this type of driving on a regular basis so how can a message get to them? They can’t all have refresher tests that is impossible due to the number of licence holders currently in the UK.
I have said before and I’ll keep saying…Government information programmes during favourite telly programmes like they used to have in the 70’s. I can still remember them because we were blitzed by them - pretty much like friggin DFS now!!! Clunk Click, kids n water, (showin age ).
Seriously though, if the government put out information bulletins during advert breaks for a prolonged period there would be results - advertising is the key…mention wanting a new settee and what’s the first name that comes into your head? — DFS. Advertise correct lane discipline - move left after overtaking. Easy peasy lemon jif

Rog! while I understand your statement most car drivers of 10 or even 20 years experience lack the knowledge that is really required. I myself have been driving for 30 years, which is quite a long time and although I can STILL remember some things my initial instructor taught me, those things are not valid now! Double de clutch, use gears on approach to junctions…as far as I know now there is no double de clutch and it’s gears to go and brakes to slow!
I don’t agree with ‘having the knack’ I used to race cars a few years ago and feel that I am a natural driver…and have ‘a knack’ driving professionally and near on 2000 miles per week I think gives me more insight to the rest of the motoring population and can see that standards are way below standard. I still think televised education is needed. nowhere else will people see the error of their ways.
The ‘knack’ is getting the driver to think differently and usually starts with a demo drive and a really good commentary along with plenty of questions.
Making it interesting is also paramount especially when ‘bending’ many of the DSA learning rules which they learned so many years ago.

Those old skills can still be valid depending on the type of wagon that you’re using and as ROG knows it can sometimes be arguable as to wether that old way of driving is’nt sometimes better even with synchro boxes. But the new generation of drivers will get a shock if transport managers decide to cut costs by going back to the older simpler designs of transmissions like they still use in the states etc.I know that’s how I’d still rather spec a truck.

Many drivers were taught that way which was correct at the time because of the less effective braking systems and crash gear boxes.
Most professionals adapted to more modern methods especially nowadays due to the modern methods saving fuel and wear (except on brake pads) whereas the non professionals are still stuck in a time warp from the time they passed their last test. A lot do not know that there are other methods and there is not a system in place to make sure that they do know.
All variable speed limit roads have speed camera support installed in the overhead gantries, the flash type boxes, they must be on about the yellow average speed boxes staying as well. You can do 90 in your car on the M6 near brum under the fixed boxes and don’t get fined. You can do 56 through the whole section of M1 when it’s clear and no fine, most of the tome you can only do 40 or 50 though due to the volume.
The middle lane hoggers isn’t bad driving, they’re just plain lazy, can’t be arsed changing lanes as this involves concentrating and checking in mirror, over shoulder etc. Then they know they have to move out again a mile down the road.
