I loved driving, I loved selling… I loved mending,… converting,…(and how)!.. dealing…counting the earnings…(or the losses)… I loved it all…and most of all meeting…enjoying…the people involved…but.counting the rivits…NO oh ,NO. …Please refer to the specification sheets for that information…
RTO…Overdrive…RTOO Double overdrive…
And the pleasure of both I have sampled…and enjoyed so much!
NMM, the worst excesses of transmission megalomania that I , (sadly), imported were mainly ex Bekins, or Allied Van Lines Owner Driver teams…did they always run at 100mph cruise?..I think they must have…
There’s also the possibility that the provision of higher gearing within the box allows the use of lower final drive gearing which provides the ability to eat hills without the need to drop as many gears as often as in the case the opposite situation of relatively lower gearing in the box with higher final drive. Therefore relatively high gearing provided in the box doesn’t always have to be about running at silly speeds.
Those RTLO gearboxes seem to have the overdrive ratio in the main 'box, with an underdrive splitter section, giving only two overdrive gears overall- 0.73 and 0.86.
A very interesting thread this one,and as I’m not particularly well versed on the finer technical points can I ask what were the differences,if any, between the RTO610 box and the 9speed box used in the ERF “A” Series units ? Cheers Bewick.

Thanks for the thought Anorak! However, the link keeps coming up ‘unavailable’. Cheers all the same. Robert
I was going to blame the Egypt Secret Service, but I clicked the links and ended up in neutral myself. The one page that I saved to my own HDD displays, but none of the links work. It was all OK last night. I’m stumped.
i don’t know the technical details dennis , but possibly the later boxes were stronger to handle more torque . the foden with the 290 big cam was retrofitted with an overdrive box from an early b series erf . working over the derbyshire hills , it destroyed the main shaft bearings several times before an original box was refitted .cheers dave
I drove three motors with 9speed fullers and they were fine but I much preferred the two Fodens I drove with the 12speed box once you got into the way of them they were a cracking gearbox. Eddie.
I chatted with Jerry Cooke about these LHD export C-series units bound for the Middle-East and we reckoned that they probably followed suit from the previous B-series M/E exports and would most likely have had 9-speed Fullers. Anyone know for sure? Robert

Thanks for the gen Dave, the difference as far as I’am concerned was that the 9speed Fullers in the 220 Cu/180LXB "A"Series were smaller boxes similar to the 10speed boxes in the Borderers whereas the 9speed boxes in our 8LXB/C chassis were larger obviously because the bigger engines required a more hefty box.Cheers Dennis.
Hello Bigtruck, I do find these ERF ECs with 9sp Fullers an interesting oddity. I’ve been looking through the thread and it seems that in general those ECs with 9sp Fullers have fairly low bhps. There are three with ■■■■■■■ 10-litre motors (250, 325 and 350); one with a ■■■■■■■ 11-litre engine (bhp not specified, but probably 380); two with Perkins TX engines (both 340s). Below, just for interest, I show a picture of a South African EC11.400 - but they put 9-speed Fullers in everything (and quite right too!). Robert

Hi Guys,
I currently have an EC unit with a 9 speed box, and you are right about the low bhp,
Mine is a 240hp EC8 with a 8.3 litre ■■■■■■■ 6CTAA engine - small but runs so sweet
I had a 1986 Foden with a 9 speed Fuller in ,not sure which 1 it was but it had the normal H pattern and the range change button was similar to the twin splitter button but with only 2 positions , it had a Gardner 320 and could really pull .I have driven several Ivecos with the 13 speed Fuller and i think the 8 half gears over 4 is / was a good arrangement … just sayin
