Hi for those of you interested in Baker’s Transport of Baker’s Wharf Southampton there is an article in August’s edition of ‘Heritage Commercials’ written by the nephew of one of my old drivers Phil Dibden who apparently was the last driver on for Eric Baker after which he went on to drive for Transport Services, befor ending his driving career with me.
Unfortunately he was unable to pass the HGV medical and had to come off the road, he did however continue with me for a few years in the yard and making deliveries of steel on our transit pickup for a Romsey company, he and his wife then moved to Weston Super Mare.
Here is one of the pics from the article a sleeper cab ERF taking a Diamond T and it’s trailer to the scrap yard in Portsmouth.
Regards Pat
AAPINX How you doing mate, im sure i remember you from LTS when i was there, Well the ringpull gave it away, Ha. You always had to get it out and show us all ha ha. Remember John Irwin also ‘The silver fox’ Saw him on containers about 5 or 6 yrs back at Soton… Good to know your still about D.
Regards Big Kev
BFC? I remember it as Barrys Flying Circus!
Oi Jago! I aint larfed so much in ages, tears runnin down me face!
Not enough things stuck to the cab in that 1932 for John "Ocean Clipper (sorry breaker is that Foden Tipper?)Eaton! Saw him when I was working at Pentagons Fareham 5 years ago, “Phoenix Freight?” I think they disappeared before the wheels got out the gate. Quote: “Fassans a pouns mate yuh!” Not sure if that was Johns wages or the money the firm owed around the place!
People around the place: Teddy Croswell was moving to Greece last time I saw him 6 years ago; Micky Olio was out there too; Andy Harris (Gingers neighbour in Alton) now Gingers neighbour in France; Ginger working for Brian Young I think; Richard Goodchild was alegedly in the Valencia area; Ian Hellawell commutes between UK and here (3km from me as the crow flies, 45 mins by road); Dave O’Shea went to Canada…then came back, working for a builders merchant somewhere Alton area; Steve Matthews works for an undertakers (best job he ever had!), does some shooting still. Margaret Blah Blah ran some trucks from Basingstoke area and moved them to Alhaurin el Grande in a hurry…with the english drivers most of whom were ex SCAC Pompey, cant think why! Gerbil was working for A Plant in Fareham; Candy and Tina from Townsend Thoresen/P&O live 6km from here and alas so did Fat Barry (RIP recently) Speciai Branch on the ferries. We’ve all escaped you see!
Pat: I keep up to speed when I can 'cos I’m still in contact with Lesley C.
Not a mention of Horace on here that I saw.
Richard “Stumpy” Evans has some vans on contract to Lynx… Do you remember the lovely Angela Evans?
Don Morris was in the Old Docks to do with NYK/Wallenius I think, but that was umpteen years ago.
That will do for now 'cos I know it will raise more questions.
Ciao
Hi found an old Scania booklet in my desk at work it is a list of Scania Operators in the South West at around 1970 I believe. Selwoods of Chandler’s Ford are also listed on another page as are Warrens of Alton.
How many of these still going■■?
Regards Pat

Hi Charlie I had a meal with Ron Griffiths a couple of months ago and I asked him about Horace and as far as he knew Horace was still on the Isle of Wight,
