brilliant pics mate i love the old euro pics.keep em coming
Hi is this the same Guy only with a sleeper conversion?
Regards Pat
Hi Pat
No, that was a much later model, I think that may have been up at Chandlers Ford , when they got bigger, and alas, their downfall. At the time I was there, it was small, and at the bungalow in Bartley, Jim was still riding at that point. We had the 2 Guys, an ERF, ( non - sleepers ) the Avon 88 ,an 86, and a Scania Vabis, (which absolutely flew.)
Hi Fergie
John Pike (Who used to be on Squibbs) has just visited me and left me these pics!
Loading the post at Ventigmilia April 04 in a 1982 Fiat 170/30 304BHP 15speed

Hi Fergie 47, just had a look at your post and pictures. ■■■■ good quality for that day mate believe me. So you were around in the days of Bartley and also no doubt the days of Norma (God rest her soul). A couple of good old names that you mentioned there to bring back some good old memories. Les Barnes was a chap I got on with very well and if I remember rightly had a daughter with Spina Bifida. Tony Kimber another well known name from the early days and well Derek Waite! What can I say? As far as I know he was the only man that I ever knew that could make a cat laugh. I could tell a few funny stories from being in that mans company. I noticed that you added RIP, if that is correct then I didn’t know and find it very sad. Give us more pictures if you have them and some stories form your early trips and other drivers that you knew in those early days please. And welcome aboard “The Memory Train”.
Hi Pat
Is that the John Pike who had a brother Robin, who was on Henry Smithers ? he also had a collection of beautiful old motor bikes ?
fergie47
Hi Fergie I think it is.
John now lives in Turin and his brother is in France and contributes to this forum
John went onto Henry Smithers and his brother followed him a little while later from BRS.
John is leaving to go back to Italy tomorrow and I believe that he is going to see his brother on the way home
Regards Pat

TIR Original. Hi.
Yes, was with JS early on, and very good it was too. He gave us youngsters the start that we all need, especially on the continent, which in the late '60’s , was still in it’s infancy, didnt see many UK based motors around…
Mrs Squibb ( Joan I think ) was a really lovely women, always a cup of tea, breakfast, or dinner if you were around, she mothered all of us, and died at a relatively young age. Norma if I remember ,was Tony Kimbers sister, who married Barry Squibb ( Apologies if I’ve got this wrong, it’s almost 40 years ago )
Haven’t seen Les Barnes or Kenny Batten since I left. Ken went to run the Social club in Totton if I remember, and both Les and Tony Kimber did a few middle east trips. Use to see Tony now and then, now there’s someone who could, and perhaps ought, to right a book, very interesting man, with loads of experience, and a tale or two to tell. An old buddie can to visit a month back and told me about Derek, if it isn’t true I’m sure he’d forgive me and laugh about it anyway, perhaps someone will confirm. I have a very interesting story about Derek and a Donkey in Portugal., It’s better than a Brian Rix farce, but true. ! It was his first trip over, and well, another time perhaps.
I lost a whole case full of pictures when I moved house once, got thrown out in error, gutted, but I have a few more I’ll post up. The stories, well were do you start !! I read the one about Jimmy Carling, who has to be the luckiest man alive, having gone in the water at Le Harve. with the Foden for PBC.Jim had been a good friend over the years, worked at Smith of Maddiston with him, but I haven’t seen him for a long time. I got to LeHarve about 4 days after he fell in, I went to see him in the hospital, he ranted and raved for me to get his clothes and" get him the hell out of the bloody hospital," I didnt, don’t think he forgave me for that !! I believe he’s gone back to Glasgow, his home town. He lost his wife May ,many years ago, a lovely lady, and I don’t think he ever fully recovered from that.
Anyway, thanks for the comments, and I’ll dig some more pictures out.
Fergie

Hi Pat
Thanks very much for that.
I know Robin better than John, when they worked at Smithers and I was at Armstrongs. Robin and I both had the same interest in bikes. I took one of his classics, a BSA Rocket Gold Star to the IOW with him for a rally, great day, and a nice bloke.
I hope he gets to read this and will PM me. What’s his Forum name ? As I also live in France we might be-able to meet up again.
Small world eh ! and great Forum !
Here is a pic from a company I did my first trip to Italy for as a subbie back in 1979.

A few more pic’s from the early '70’s ( 70/71)
ITALY. So, how many axles do you want ? and this is 1970, at 40+ tons, the UK was still 32 ton gross. They are all Fiat, in those days, if you didn’t run a Fiat, they made it very difficult to get an operators licence. Some of the axles either lifted, or steered, or both, single or double wheels. Think what the UK was running at the same period . Most, if not all of these, would have been RHD. ( for the mountain roads )
The Bottom right is a French registered Saviem " double bottom" or road train , again early ’ 70’s, about '73 I guess, well before it’s time.
Top L. Le Harve terminal, Inbound. From left to right SCA Freight, Cawthorn Sinclare, Jameson, Owner driver called Bill from London, and European Traction Services.
Top R. Mt Blanc, E.T.S. next to VIT transport ( this French guy , Michael, became a good friend, and still is nearly 40 years on )
Centre L, and Centre R. These 2 had a bad day in Spain, hit each other head-on, I came across the accident less than 10 mins after it happened, BOTH drivers were OK, sat on the grass, having a ■■■ !!!
Bottom L. Maggie’s fallen over ! Old diamond T, ex US army ,arrives to give her a hand up.
Bottom R. F88, just outside Bordeaux, north bound, dead straight road for miles, no skid marks, no one else involved. Explain that to the boss !
European Traction Services,

Found this pic A Guy and Foden loading Southampton docks anyone recognise the trucks?
Regards Pat
I would hazard a guess at the Foden being one of Robsons but that is all
Sorry Wheelnut but the Foden ain’t a Robson motor, they all had Border something in big letters under the screen, it’d be big enough to see in the pic, someone must recognise the Big J though, there weren’t many liveries with stripes in those days.
Found this pic of one of R K Crisp’s Guy I know they had a depot in Southampton anyone know anymore about this one?
Regards Pat
