Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Now you’ve got me guessing and the only name I can think of would be the legendery, Pat Duffy but if it were the case would make me delighted as the last I heard he’d died of a heart attack. Please make my day.

Hi TIR you are right on the money  Hence the Scania reversed monika!!

Legendary? Hmm don’t think so!

I did have a mini stroke also known as a TIA 10 years ago at 45 caused by an erratic heartbeat but fully recovered still have my LGV licence still play squash/racket ball and I still have a yard at Nursling I am running a 1988 143 Scania 6X4 coupled with a Nooteboon stepframe lowloader driven by the legendary Terry Moody mainly moving local plant. All the old Scania spares have gone just renting out more and more of the yard and looking after my wife Sue who unfortunately has a brain tumour.

So now that should bring on some flack

Regards Pat

Question is who are the rest of you

Answers on the back of a £20 please

Hi Pat, welcome back to the world of the living. Honestley mate I had been told that you had died of a hearty attack quite a while ago. Cant for the life of me remember who the lying ■■■■■■■ was now. I’ve just had a similar sort of experience. Just had an angiogram and been told Ive had a heart attack that I didn’t know about. Just like me to miss out on something! Recovering now though and told I will live a normal life. Really sorry to hear about Sue though and understand how you must feel. Yes mate you are legendary as you are known all over the country for supplying Scania spares and keeping many owner drivers as well as companies on the road. Glad to here you got paid by Albert S. 'cause I never have and at least ■■■■ Turpin wore a mask.
Welcome back mate and we’ll do some more stories.
Nobby.

Gosh Nobby but you are very rude :unamused: , did like the

hearty attack

though, just the sort we want.  D.

Pat Duffy eh!! A legend in his own lunchtime.I remember being told a story that at one time you were up in court accused of breaking into a pound note. However the judge let you off when you tearfully told him this was only your first offence. Also you said that you would never do it again. This is only hearsay you understand.

And I haven’t Charlie!

I was taught to be cautious!

Well said Pat and quite rightly so. I spent most of my money on strong drink,■■■ and drugs,Then I squandered the rest.

Hey Charlie

I heard that you were on a ladder on the side of a tilt one day pulled out your hankie to blow your nose and a halfpenny fell out of your pocket you came down so fast that it hit you on the head!!!

Regards Pat

I wasted mine on Scanias!!!

That was a true story Pat.You must have been reading my CV. I will post more later when I’ve finished the washing and ironing and cooked the wifes tea.

Hi Nobby (still no wiser!) here are some Pics taken from old photographs and all the best on the health front.

Happy viewing Pat

Now then Pat I wonder it this Nobby is Nobby Hall who I worked with back in the 60s.He was a big ugly sob.But he had a heart of gold.He would give you his last shilling.

Hi Charlie I have no idea who he is only Nobby I thought I knew mended trucks and raced grass track Nobby Golden! But I met him about 3 years ago at a sidecar rally at Popham Airfield.

Who are you Charlie I must know you surely? I thought I knew all of the STS crew!

Regards Pat

TIR re the Jameson’s story after Charlie sold out to United Transport didn’t he start ACJ Transportation had an office near the lorry park opposite TJ Pouparts the fruit merchants in Castle way was it?

Another rogue has sprung to my mind Colin Wilkes? ran Whiplan and had a sucession of ompanies that all failed

Another couple of names Jumbo Lewis RIP Malcolm Gillard not sure if drivers but think so but were fitters for Molo Transport when I knew them ■■■■ Ireland was the MD and Sid Pugh transport manager. Tony Lowden was a driver for them who I still see.
Anyone remember Harry and Mick Phillips each had their own trucks.
Also Taffy Griffiths ran a skyblue and black fleet of old small flatbeds thrupenny bit Morris’ and a Leyalnd Terrier out of Belgrave road Swathling.
Peter Mason had a tidy fleet of tractor units he ran as Smart Freight out of Belgrave Road too.
Ingrem Furness had an office in Empress Road subbed work out a Dave something and an Andy they bougth my first TK Bedford off me I think Dave then ran a Scania tractor in Europe Andy went to work for a container company in the docks
Im sure there’s loads more!!!

Regards Pat.

Is the Marsh pub still there? Opposite the dock gate. There was also a little cafe next to the pub. Bloke was called Jack. Did marvellous toast, as I recall. His wife had connections with the Soton underworld, or so she once told me. Had a very pretty daughter. I used to stay in the digs above the cafe sometimes.

Hi Pat so you still haven’t twigged. Well proves obviously I aint that well known. Never mind Johnny Lee will put you right Monday. Really my days over the water was a bit earlier than yours so you didn’t ever run with me. I was just an o/d, then run a few trucks under the name JBM (Haulage) Ltd. Queens Terrace.
Then decided being o/d was less trouble again but then A.E.S. put paid to that .
Owned 40 % of Trebor Transport but had nothing to do with the running of it and as you know obviously done a small fortune there. Transport then was a no go for me but did get involved a little later when allowed myself to get talked into it. I could have made a good manager for someone but never even gave it a thought although I had some good contacts for work. Did get involved again about 10 or so years ago. Was running half a dozen fridges and units to Spain, Gibraltar and Portugal with a partner and could see it was not that good. Although I got out it still came back to bite my ■■■ ! For quite a princely sum too. Story of my bloody life.

Well TIR Original, you sure aint Nobby Hall.Hows about Nobby Clarke? If I remember right he was an ex transvestite and pub piano player who turned to transport as a last desperate attempt to gain status. However he failed miserably. Is that you?

Hey Charlie, the only bit you got right there is the bit about failing miserably in transport ! ! You certainly got the name wrong and I aint never been a transvestite as I know of. Like I said before I did not frequent the Juniper Berry either. I could never play the piano but did master the guitar and played with a few groups in my youth. Always carried one in the truck and have been known to play a bit of flamenco to the locals in Spain. The last group I was with was called " Raintree County" a country and western group. We used to play Fri and Sat in the Red Lion , Shirley. You would often see my unit parked outside on a friday night after rushing back from Milan or somewhere to make the gig.
Come on mate there’s been enough information to write my biography.

Sorry Steve but I never answered your question on The Marsh pub. I’m afraid it’s long gone and the little cafe next door. Sign of the times though,as ever nothing stays the same only the memory’s we have of them. If you were to go into the part of the old dock where the ferries ran from you would wonder what part of the world you were in. It’s just as if those times never existed 'cause they certainly seem to be wiped out of history and except for a few old git’s like us I suppose they are. By the way I haven’t seen Bobby Jones yet to say hello for you but I’m sure I’ll bump into him again soon, it’s not usually very long.

Blimy Nobby I know who you are Can I have your autograph.I’ve been a fan of yours since I was a kid.Had a few good nights in the Red Lion myself.Don’t tell the wife!!

Hi Pat.Re your posting about Smart Freight I remember Ernie Smart very well.Tight fisted old person but I liked him a lot.Sat in his little office at Belgrave Road listening to his tales many a time.Didn’t know that Mason owned it .I thought that when Ernie went it folded up.

Well Nobby you have got me I just do not know who you are! But if John comes along Monday he is sure to know I dare say.
As you say I probably did not ever run with you (old git)  but have had my times in Europe I had some really great drivers and looking back I can’t believe the crap that I have sent out and it came back!!
I owe alot to these drivers John Shaw,Dave Ellis,George Rayner(and as he always took his wife affectionally called ‘George and Mildred’),Ian Beavis,Eddie Huntley,Ronnie Huntley,Ron Maffey,Paddy Keoghan,Phil Keoghan,Dave Tutt (best driver I have ever seen),Micky Matthews RIP,Larry Fitzgerald, Ken Parke, Wally Hawkins RIP, Rolly Long, Gary Bampton, Tony Burgess RIP,Tony Davies RIP,Chris Goater RIP,Baghouse Bill, Ian Ritchie,Walkabout Irish Paul Driver from Dublin!,Phil Taylor,Phil Dibden, Mark Dibden and many others I cannot remember, Really good old boys.

I and they have changed clucthes/gearboxes/turbos/heads/wheels/propshafts/springs/wheel nuts/fan belts/rang changes in fact there not alot we have not done! In a back street in Milan myself and John Shaw parked under a bridge used a block and tackle slung by a strap from the bridge to change a range change gearbox then on the way home he swapped a range change on another truck.

No disrespect but the drivers of today would not do it now! Pat Scorey twice drove his truck back from Italy over the Frejus with no clutch with no damage to the gearbox I might add!

Sadly those days are now gone no borders anymore infact very few English Trucks in Europe! I went to Spain in 2006 to Javea with our RV and the only UK trucks I saw were Denby, Richard Long and about 6 frigos!

Come on Nobby and Charlie come clean just who are you■■?

Regards Pat
