Was that where Benny Hill worked for ?
Buzzer: Kingswood had “Black Bob” (Chien noir du Havre) loading trailers at ATO Chem. Give him his due he could rope a load. Only trouble was some places insisted on a sheeted load on arrival. Was it Bassets the sweets people (Swizzles, Refreshers etc) up near Stockport were one such outfit. That meant unroping and sheeting the load in Pompey before you could set off!
Benny Hill worked for Brown & Harrisons Eastleigh Depot.

Benny Hill worked for James Hann’s Dorset dairy in the 1940’s
Hann’s were acquired by Brown & Harrisons in the late 50s (1959 ?) & in turn Brown & Harrison were then acquired by Unigate Dairies

I recognised this bridge straight away. It was when I was with Robert Baillie transport in the
early 1970s, I knew my journey to Baillies Depot at Horndean was nearly complete when I
passed under this bridge. Cheers, Ray.

I once flew under the Golden Gate bridge in a Cessna, but that was on a simulator. Does that count? I then landed the same aircraft on a carrier. I was much heartened in my own appreciation of my skill when a British Airways Jumbo pilot said to me it was the closest thing to real flying that he knew.

Yep, the local “Echo” says it was a Curtiss Tomahawk, and that ties up with maintenance records from the time.

I seem to remember there being daffodil fields alongside the road over the A31 there. A bright joyful sight in the spring.
Here`s another pic of it being demolished.

Hi Ricardo trust you & Lady Wellow and the family are in fine fettle, not heard from your legal eminence for some time. That picture brings back some memories not just the Volvo rigid but the load of ATOchem in the background, looks like one of Les Flack’s trailers and I would like a Golden coin for every load of that we pulled for SCAC & Les, rope in a hundred bits as they could not grasp the tying of a dolly, took out a coil of new rope every time they loaded in France, they either tied a permanent loop & tied it of and cut or wrapped it round the tighteners which were common on the side of there flat trailers also cutting to length then we had to tie them altogether if we reloaded the trailer.
To think all that went on well over 40 years ago now when we wuzz young, keen & fit, still have flashbacks of a very slight female spreading sheets over a load in Fawley refinery and could not believe what I was watching and of course she was your wife, wonder if she could still do it today![]()

, anyways enough of my rambling all the best, Buzzer JD.
Hi John,
We are fine thanks, hope you and Gill are keeping well.
I remember the first ATO trailers coming in a company called Salverhart in Portsmouth handled them, first thing you had to get were palm couplings for the brake lines, and as you say the roping was amazing.Angie is still 8 stone, but I don’t think she would adhere to the “Elf and Safety” they have today, she would like to take one of the Scanias over Mont Cenis to compare it to the Maggi Deutz 232 with it’s 208 bhp she used to take over there at 38 tons. !!
Regards
Richard
